Injured Filipino official recovering after surgery

A Filipino labor official who was seriously injured in a road accident in Saudi Arabia last Thursday is now recovering after undergoing a two-hour brain surgery, a Saudi online news site reported Sunday.

The Saudi Gazette said Filipino welfare officer Reynaldo Eugenio Jr. is recovering after he sustained serious head injuries in a traffic accident at Lina Road.

"Eugenio underwent a two-hour long brain surgery for haematoma on Friday. His condition is improving" said Philippine embassy charge d'affaires Nestor Padalhin.

Alex Dupee, president of Advanced Guardians of Worldwide Incorporated (AGWI), said Eugenio's doctors described his chances of recovery as "bright."

Eugenio hails from Bulacan Province in Manila and came here in January 2006. He was planning to get married next year, said Dupee.

Eugenio, 35, was traveling in an Isuzu Trooper with three other welfare officers when a tire of their vehicle burst, causing it to flip over several times.

The welfare team was on a mission by the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) to Al-Jouf to offer consular and passport services to Filipinos there.

All injured were rushed to the King Khalid Military Hospital. Eugenio was admitted to the hospital's intensive care unit while the other members of the welfare team escaped with minor bruises and abrasions and had been discharged from the hospital.

Eugenio's next of kin and government agencies such as the Philippine Foreign Office and Overseas Welfare Workers Administration (OWWA) are being updated on his condition.

Padalhin described Eugenio as a "workaholic" who attends to the problems of the Filipino community in the Kingdom, especially of engineers, nurses and blue-collar workers in Al-Jouf, Sakaka, Arar, Guriat and Rafa.

Dupee, who traveled with the POLO team for the visit but in a separate car, said Eugenio lost consciousness after he was brought to the hospital.

But he said Eugenio was conscious and even tried to remove blood stains from his clothes right after the accident. - GMANews.TV
