How to become a session musician

by Marcus

Being a session musician can be a very rewarding experience especially collaborating with different artists and musicians. If you are serious about wanting to be a session musician I would first suggest practicing daily on your instrument or voice if you are a vocalist, try and be familiar and adaptable with various music styles and patterns as possible (which would widen your opportunity to a broader network in music). Visit local rehearsal and recording studios and mention to the in-house engineers or producers that you are interested in doing session work and you would be available if any work come along, it would also be a good idea to leave your contact details with the management and hopefully you will be called when a backing vocalist/bassist/piano or guitarist is needed for recording or an engagement. Try and keep a good reputation with personality, presence, timekeeping, reliability and patience, it all goes a long way, you can be one of the greatest musicians out there but if you haven't got any of the fore mentioned assets no one will hire you for miles, word travels and a good reputation or feedback is one of the greatest tools you can have to sell and advertise yourself as a great session artist. Like any tradesman keep your equipment in good condition and order, check your instrument backline regularly, carry enough cables, strings, accessories and spares with you when you arrive for a session and always arrive on time, the more sessions you do will gain you more experience and a solid reputation to always keep you in demand.
