Dog Breeds for People that Travel Without Their Pets
by Ken CroweDog Breeds for People that Travel Without Their Pets
Many people love to travel. Some people love to travel with their pets. Others love their pets, but just cannot travel with them for various reasons. Perhaps the hotel that they plan to stay in does not accept pets, or they are on a business trip and cannot bring the animal with them. If you are a person who is contemplating on getting a dog, but are reluctant to do so because you will be away from home often, what breeds are most suitable for you?
People who enjoy traveling are often away from home for extended periods of time. Their pets are sometimes placed in boarding kennels or at a friend’s place and they are not exercised too frequently. Like career-oriented people with busy lifestyles, these dogs spend many hours of the day alone at home or in a kennel. For such lifestyles, a less active breed would be better suited because they generally require less exercise and are quite content with lounging around all day. Some less active breeds are listed below:
- Basset Hound
- Clumber Spaniel
- English Bulldog
- Mastiff
- Japanese Spaniel
- Newfoundland
- Great Dane
- Rottweiler
- Bloodhound
- Bouvier des Flandres
- Irish Wolfhound
- Great Pyrenees
- Bernese Mountain Dog
- Chow Chow
- Akita
- Coonhound
- Borzoi
- Rhodesian Ridgeback
- Curly-coated/Flat-coated Retriever
- Greyhound
- Afghan Hound
- Standard Poodle
- Tibetan Terrier
- Boston Terrier
- Pekingese
- Pug
- Whippet
- Shih Tzu
When people go on vacation, they frequently place their dog in a boarding kennel. Some dogs have separation anxiety and get very depressed and stressed while boarding. However, ‘independent’ breeds are those that are more aloof and do not form such dependent bonds with their family members. These breeds can generally be left alone for periods of time and are ideal for families that are frequently away on vacation. Examples of such breeds are:
- Borzoi
- Miniature Pinscher
- Toy Poodle
- Saluki
For the family that prefers to place their dog in a boarding kennel or at a friend’s place while they are away on vacation, it is important to choose a breed that is adaptable and easygoing. A change in environment or daily routine would not stress out the dog and would therefore reduce your own stress level. You would not have to worry about your dog being depressed or not eating because he/she is in a strange environment. Such breeds include:
- Basset Hound
- Bloodhound
- Border Terrier
- Clumber Spaniel
- English Bulldog
- English Setter
- Flat-coated Retriever
- Great Dan
- Great Pyrenees
- Mastiff
- Newfoundland
