I got this from someone in another group and thought it was some great information to share with you .

Basically the purpose of an elevator speech is to be able to introduce yourself and your business to a complete stranger in the time it would take to ride in an elevator.  So you're looking at anywhere from 30-60 seconds.  The elevator speech should do these things:
  1. Identify WHO you are (Your name, company name and your title - short and sweet)
  2. Identify WHAT you do (your main product/service that you are promoting at the time - you can generalize here....no need to list EVERYTHING that you sell or do....save that for the 1 on 1 you schedule with this person)
  3. Identify HOW  your product/service can benefit your listener (it's helpful if this also creates a sense of urgency in your listener) - what need do you fill (such as taking the time and guesswork out of creating fabulous home cooked meals for the busy parent or offering a larger variety of meals for the family that is tired of the same old stuff they get in the grocery store, etc)
  4. Identify what action your listener should take (call today to schedule a consultation or to place an order, etc)
  5. Give your business card to your listener so he/she can contact you.  You can also ask if your listener has a card or way you can contact them.
In a referral group type setting (which is what I am involved with) you also need to include in your elevator speech what type of referrals you are looking for....and BE SPECIFIC!!!!  In other words, if you are trying to get in with a local gift basket company state this when you state what type of referrals you are looking for.  If you're trying to make a connection with some local Red Hat groups, state which groups you'd like an introduction to.  Chances are someone in the networking/referral group may know someone in the company/organization/social group that you are trying to connect with.

Here is a link to a pdf file online that explains how to create an effective "Elevator Speech".

I have been involved with networking/referral groups in one way or another for the past 20 years and believe me, they are very effective and the BEST way to build your business (not to mention the least expensive way).
