A social bookmarking system or network is a list of Internet resources that may be found to be useful. The lists of information is made available to subscribers at a network or website. Links are often listed by topic, category, tags or even randomly.
Besides webpages, services specified to a subject or format can be listed-feeds, books, videos, shopping items, locations, ect can also be found.
In essence you could consider it similar to a directory that readers have submitted what they found useful.
These links to your webpage, blog, or product are huge in thier ability to increase your ranking. When you are added to one of these lists. this is an inbound link. Inbound Links always increase your ranking. When others eank your content that useful, your rank will simply move up!
More traffic to your site. The more places that you are listed the more traffic you will recieve
More Influence. As your content is listed, you will become an expert in your field. People will want to associate with you. When you are seen in that context, you will be more successful
You can bookmark a website of course, a blog, a forum posting, a newsletter, or almost anything that will have interest. Remember though, as always, content is king ! Bookmarking anything that is not rich in content is like business sucide.
You can bookmark your own work, or place icons on those locations and hope others thought your work was worthy of a placement.
You can use  a list of icons or place a single icon of a service that will add it to multiple locations.
