Editorial considerations when posting in forums....and having been a Jerry Seinfeld tv show viewer even the reruns run again and again ....

by Beth Schmillen

I've watched that Seinfeld show a few times...you might even say I'm a fan of the show with Cosmos Kramer and the rest of the characters along with their antics... including an Episode or two about the Soup Nazi.... Having said that it brings to mind some editorial considerations when posting in forums....

this (possible) essay is a work in progress....
It has been pointed out to me by someone I hold in high esteem (because of
their art and graciousness...)  that I have offended members of the APSense
community.  I have used a phrase in a manner that was not intended to be
a personal insult about any individual but  yes, quite derogatory about the anti-spam  measures instituted in late July 2006 here at APSense.
The sentence that is less than appreciated:  "The Spam nazi's are out in full force... WATCH out :: Beware :: You are being rated!!"

...and for some absurd reason I have been unable to grasp the nature of this
inconsideration ...on my part. I must be dense. But then I am an American with
less sophistication and international finesse than some...

There is an absurdity to using such a word in regards to the difficulty regarding
spam. I chose it because it highlights what is really a simple matter for the members who power APSense monitoring their own Groups and the administrators monitoring the Groups they monitor without suggesting that anyone is not understanding what the problems are due to English being a second language ~ or ~ suggesting in a condescending way that maybe you aren't running the ApsenseExpress or you would know what's going on type of comment.
here is who Jerry Seinfeld is and what his sitcom is about... from what I can recall
Jerry Seinfeld, the comedian, who has the episode about the Soup Nazi? Seinfeld is a Jew. The Soup Nazi is an eastern european guy (character) who makes the best soup in New York City from olde country family recipes. Only, you have to stand in line a certain way, step forward only when it's your turn, present your money only after a specific lapse of time...and never, never ask for extra bread or special orders... or you will be banned from the Soup Nazi's restaurant! It sets up for some very funny scenes...
that is the reference I was using. An absurd remark meant to have some bite but to be mostly ... humorous in that absurd way that some may have an appreciation for and after some consideration... I can now see why others don't appreciate it at all...
But... I'm still struck with the dilemma of whether or not I should edit my writing.
I was asked to change the wording for several reasons.
        1)  That it's an insult and that I'm being seen as someone who is name-calling and that this is not good for the community.
        2)  That there is an overwhelming consensus world wide that it is an extremely insulting phrase to those it's directed towards ---
So, that's what I have been pondering. The humor of Soup Nazi to the insult of Spam Nazi...
In the past 2-3 days, I've exchanged more messages with my very patient friend than I know... upwards of half a dozen and then the replies... so... in case anyone is still reading and wondering why I'm writing this... it is a BLOG ... it's of concern to me because I've upset a friend.  Although they would say it's not that... that I come across insulting and name calling and unprofessional...
I've  never blogged like this before... this is geat!
"And you don't have to be a New Yorker to love Seinfeld, as the show's popularity proves - there's probably a Soup Nazi in Kansas and a Vandalay Industries in Alaska. " http://www.tbs.com/stories/story/0,,266,00.html

Let me digress.
I'll have to digress more tomorrow....(smile)

Hi Beth,

I applaud the "SPAM RATING" then I gave it some thought. Today I wanted to make a comment on a members blog post. I hesitated, why?

Well, what I had to say was supportive but not in total in agreement to the member. The member is one of my contacts. However, I'm not sure how they would have taken to my response.

Instead I made my comment in my own blog and linked back to their post. I still applaud the "SPAM RATING" but I was leery. It's a double edge sword.
