The Adventure of a Lifetime
As I approached the age of 65 I looked forward to playing golf, reading all those books I never found time for and traveling around the US with my wife. We would visit our kids and grandkids. Just taking our time exploring our great country.
Then in 2002 our son, his wife and two boys moved to Guatemala. Their dream was to locate property and build a home for children. Not just any children but specifically those that lived on the streets and who were not available for adoption. We supported them in their decision.
For three years they worked on the paperwork to establish a Guatemalan non-profit association. After many trips to the national government offices and many revisions to the documents they were stamped "complete".
In early 2004 they located property near Santo Tomas Milpas Altos. It had a house that was started but not completed. The house needed to be expanded to meet their requirements.
Unless you live or have lived in a third world country you can't appreciate how difficult it is to accomplish anything. A trip to the bank or to the utility company to pay the bill can be an all day job. Building a house can take years. It's taken three years and the house is amlost ready for children.
My wife and I retired in October 2005. We sold our business, our house, our vehicles. Everything we owned was sold, given away or packed into 15 small containers and 4 suitcases and on June 26, 2006 we came to Guatemala.
