Texas House Speaker Tom Craddick acting like a Child
This story says a lot about the problems with our Government. In a nutshell, a lot of the Representatives of the Texas House, both Democrat and Republicans, are tired of the iron-fisted leadership of Speaker Tom Craddick. So much so, that even though his term doesn't end until January of 2009, they are trying to oust him.
In fact, four Republicans have filed their candidacies to be the new Speaker.
However, Speaker Craddick isn't going to go quietly, or at all, if he has his way. Here is the childish part, folks. To ask for a vote in the House to oust the Speaker, the Representative has to be recognized BY the Speaker before he can make a motion. Therefore, Speaker Craddick refuses to recognize those that want him out. Voila'! No Motion. To quote Speaker Craddick, "The speaker's discretion to recognize a member on a motion on any matter is unappealable." Pretty slick and VERY childish, in my opinion.
To use the Rules of Order to undermine the basic workings of the Texas House is "leadership" at its worst and most abusive to the people of Texas that elected him to do his job. It also eerily parallels the "leadership" of another Texas Politician I can think of. Keep power at all cost!
Children will do most anything to get their way. They don't usually have a sense of right or wrong about it. They just want what they want, when they want it. Children have an excuse for acting this way. They haven't learned any better nor matured enough to make decisions that are actually good for them and others. The "Honorable" Speaker Tom Craddick has no such excuse for his actions.
