10 Spontaneous Date Ideas to Do with Your Boyfriend

by Cynthia Price DatingAdvice.com, Managing Editor
You’ve watched your burnin’ hunk o’ love slowly morph into a lifeless lump o’ love that sleeps and farts in front of the TV with the Lay-Z-Boy in full recline.

Well, it’s 8 p.m. on Friday night and you just can’t stand the thought of wasting another night at home doing nothing. You need an idea for a date and fast.

Don’t worry about it. Just wipe the drool from his cheek, wake him up (with a big smile, please) and let his initial moan, groan or bark just slide off like water off a duck’s back.

He doesn’t feel like dressing up? No problem. He’s not in the mood for noise and people? You can work with that. He doesn’t get paid until next week? That doesn’t have to be a problem either.

He’s got no objections left, so throw him a clean shirt, give him 10 minutes to freshen up and shave and get ready for a good time.

There are ideas for every budget and every time of day and for staying home or for going out and about. Spontaneous date ideas are everywhere, so just pull one out of the air — or pick one from our list.

1. Progressive dinner.

Start at your local pub for happy hour and appetizers, head to that Thai or Italian place you’ve been meaning to try for your entree, and then grab dessert at the Dairy Queen on the way home.

With time permitting, stop at the pub again for a game of pool or darts. Mix it up and do it a little differently every time.

2. Photo scavenger hunt.

Each of you make a list of 10 things and throw them individually into a hat and draw. This way no one can say they got all the hard ones.

A lighted church steeple, a neon “Open” sign, a red convertible, a yellow Volkswagen, a woman with a cane…you get the idea. Then go out with your phone cams and start snapping. Last one back to the coffee shop or tavern buys the first round.

3. Get artistic.

Pick up a cheap canvass and some paints at the art supply store and paint each other’s portraits or do a still life of a bowl of fruit. A glass of wine and some music might be helpful, and throw some slice-and-bake cookies in the oven while you’re at it, too. Or,you could go to a pottery place and paint a nice coffee mug for each other.

4. Spa night.

Start out with a nice bubble bath in the tub, and then give him a rough deep tissue Shiatsu massage and let him give you a gentle and sensual Swedish massage. Find the instructions on Google.

Facials with refrigerator products might be nice. Give him a manicure and let him paint your nails — see how he does. Then get out the spray can of whipped cream and see what happens.

5. Be a tourist.

It’s true people who visit your city see more of the sights than the locals ever do. So go to the top of your tallest building, take the bus tour, take the tours of some historical buildings and just explore the neighborhoods you’ve never been to before.

6. Stay in a hotel.

It’s always fun when you’re on the road to enjoy the amenities of a nice hotel. No need to leave town. Find a hotel with a pool and a hot tub. A hot tub in the room is really great, and romantic too, but be aware some of the places that have them tend to be cheesy and sleazy (although the jungle room with the heart-shaped bed might not be all bad).

Hotels have nice restaurants and room service in addition to workout rooms, saunas and a swimming pool. There also have nice bars and are often convenient to other fun night spots.

7. Games & crafts night.

Play chess, Chinese checkers, Life, Chutes & Ladders or Battleship (the strip version is a lot of fun, especially when he sinks your battleship).

Or it can be video games — the racing games work out great for two players. And you can teach him how to crochet and do needle point, too.

8. Have a pajama party with a purpose.

Get on your flannel pajamas, pop some of Orville Redenbacher’s finest and clean out that junk drawer or closet that is always getting on your nerves. Or rearrange the furniture, redecorate the bathroom or paint the living room.

9. Plan out your dreams.

Start making plans for a great five-year European vacation or cruise. Think of all the things you want to do, the places you want to go and the sights you want to see.

Check out your destinations, possible accommodations and travel arrangements online. Then start planning your itinerary, make a budget and figure out how you will save for it.

Common goals and dreams go a long way in getting couples to work together as a team and develop slow love, which is important in creating a true and abiding partnership.

10. Get to know each other.

What? Yes. Most couples don’t really know a lot of the stories, histories, plans, hopes, fears and dreams of their partners.

Go out for a nice dinner in a relaxing atmosphere and bring along a list of questions for each other — things you don’t really know.

Avoid questions about his future with you, as that can be uncomfortable for him.

Still haven’t found the right idea?

Go to some open houses of mansions for sale. Draw a floor plan of your dream house together.

  • Make a joint bucket list.
  • Refinish that old coffee table.
  • Go for a hike in the state park.
  • Go to a flea market.
  • Make a time capsule.
  • Take both of your mothers out for dinner.
  • Go to a shooting or driving range.
  • Go to the dollar theater, a fast food joint and an arcade.
  • Take a cooking or art class together.

The options really are endless.
