Between the countless cores (gorp, regency and cottage, just to name a notable few) and enviable aesthetics (read: model off-duty, indie sleaze and twee), deciphering your own style can often feel like less of a personal pursuit, and more of a consolidation of what we see on social media.

While the celebrity style set has countless specialist stylists at their disposal to compile fashion-forward ensembles, the rest of us are spending our days constantly chasing their sought-after styles, often losing ourselves in the process.

While you may be a Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen The Row sun, your moon could be a Miu Miu maximialist and Depop loving girlie with an avant garde inspired ascending.

So when it comes to choosing what to wear, or which "persona" to be today, your dressing routine may feel like more of an uphill battle than an inspired fashion wellness practice.

But as any fashion purveyor with an active social media presence will know, TikTok is harbouring the secret to unlocking your unique personal aesthetic and all it takes is three simple words.

Enter New York based stylist Allison Bornstein. Boasting over 122.8k TikTok followers, Bornstien is changing how the industry approaches personal style and shifting how we perceive fashion.

"My hope is to empower people to view fashion as a tool for self-expression and overall wellness. By encouraging clients to shop their closets, tune into their authentic needs, and embrace the pleasure of 'repeat dressing'," Bornstein explains to ELLE Australia.

Transforming women's relationship with clothes one piece at a time, Bornstien is our holy grail virtual stylist, sharing her expert tips and tricks free of charge and in highly viral and addictive short videos.

Of course, for those who don't know Bornstein, you may know her greatest contribution to the #fashiontok community: the three word method.

For those of us who grew up with teen magazines filled to the brim with fashion challenges (the trite provocations like 'wear something you've not worn in six months' or 'wear the outfit you claim you can't pull off'), the idea of suffering through another may seem arduous or even clichéd.

However, as it turns out, this method is not only extremely entertaining to do, but will prove to be the key to evolving your style and ensuring that what you buy has a well deserved place in your wardrobe.

"The 'three word method' was born out of my work with personal styling clients and is designed to help you define and refine the details of your personal style," Allison tells us. The premise of this method is simple: synthesize your three words et voilà.

"I have discovered that identifying a three word recipe can really help clients unlock so many ideas and serve as a great reference point for getting dressed, editing, shopping and evolving their style in general," she adds.

Whether you have a closet full of clothes but never know what to wear, or are just curious to know how your closet stacks up, the three word method is the perfect solution to overcoming the overwhelming feeling that fashion can often give you.

Allison tells us it's essentially choosing three adjectives to describe your own style and finding these words is as easy as looking in your own wardrobe.

The first step is to pull out your go-to pieces, whether that be the perfect nap dress or practical pair of blue denim, and describing the visual of the aesthetic. This could range anywhere from 'romantic' and 'minimalist' to 'messy' and 'cartoonish', which are all words Allison's attributed to some of our favourite style icons.

Looking for similarities in patterns, prints, silhouettes, styles and just the general aesthetic can help you refine how you describe what you're wearing, and will in turn equip you with information about how you dress.

But the best part of the three word method is that it's constantly evolving, just like you're personal style. It's not a hard and fast rule to live by, but something to serve as a guide.

Once you've discovered what your own unique three words are, Bornstein recommends using this as a checklist. Once you've decided your outfit base, or your first word, you can use the remaining two words to accent and add your unique flair to the ensemble.

"It's all about creating a look that feels balanced and has just a little bit of each of your three words, that's what makes it feel unique and genuine," Bornstein continues.

However if the idea of rushing home and diving deep into defining your closet is enough to send shivers down your side (type B's we hear you) then fear not. Below, we've rounded up the three words of some of the most prolific style icons to help you in deciding your own.

Whether these are women you emulate with your own fashion choices, or just have a certain je ne sais quoi that you can't help but feel attracted towards, keep scrolling below for Bornstien's take on their three words.Read more at:cheap formal dresses uk | short prom dress uk
