How do you choose the right test automation framework for your project?

by Kathleen Campbell Professional Quality Analyst

What is a test automation framework?

It is a platform that combines programs, compilers and tools that help in leveraging automated test scripts. A framework is a set of rules that an application should follow to produce optimized results. The overall efficiency of a test automation platform is increased by adopting the test automation framework.

Reusable code snippets and a set of internal libraries are provided that help in running automated test scripts. Secure methods are being set up for automated tests so that a uniform test code syntax is provided for the entire application or project.

Following are the steps required to select the right test automation framework:

1. The project requirements should be listed: A clear understanding of the expectations from a project perspective should be known to the team. Project specifications such as the future scope of the project, specific environments on which the project is going to be run and team bandwidth are some key aspects that need to be considered.

The type of framework can be properly ascertained for a software product or application by thoroughly understanding the project requirements. Hence, the team should put in the required effort to know about the project.

2. Market research needs to be conducted: Based on carrying out adequate market intelligence, the right test automation framework can be analyzed. Companies can decide between commercial frameworks such as TestComplete and open-source frameworks such as Appium or Selenium.

3. The significance of stakeholder inputs: A test automation framework is a set of common libraries and testing tools that are leveraged across teams. When a specific framework is being taken into consideration, taking input from stakeholders is considered to be a wise move. Teams that will be using a test automation framework should communicate basic application necessities and priorities.

4. Aligning business goals: The objective of a test automation framework is to make sure that the software development process is streamlined and effective. The test automation framework strategy should be aligned with the business objectives of a company.
