What is PDO Lift?
PDO thread lift utilises soluble polydioxanone threads to lift the sagging contours of the face. Polydioxanone threads have been used in surgeries for many years because of their dissolving nature.

PDO threads relax the muscles and stimulate inflammatory process which kick-starts the production of new collagen in the skin. Along with collagen PDO threads engage the muscles of the face to synthesise elastin and hyaluronic acid which are essential for the skin vitality. These threads are inserted at a particular depth beneath the skin with the help of cannula or a very fine needle.

The threads are inserted into either subcutaneous fat, muscle or the skin itself depending upon the area to be treated. The results are progressive in nature; they become visible after a few days and become stronger as the time passes. Final effects can be seen after 3-4 months of the treatment. The progressive effect is due to the gradual synthesis of collagen under the skin. The threads dissolve slowly after two months and as they dissolve, the surrounding tissues contract giving the skin an outward lift. The effects of the thread lift last as long as the produced collagen keeps the skin lifted which can be up to two years.

Threads of different length and thickness are used for various areas of the face. Short length threads are used to smoothen the fine lines around eyes, while thick strands are used to lift the cheeks. Long threads are used to lift the skin of jawline and neck region.

Areas that can be treated with thread lift:
PDO threads are very versatile and can be utilisedin any part of the face, neck and body. The ideal candidates for the thread lift are aged between 35 and 65. The thread lift can treat the sagging jawline, sagging neck, drooping cheeks, deep nasolabial folds, and marionette lines.

What does the treatment involve?
The treatment includes a detailed discussion and mutual agreement on the treatment plan so that any possible side effects can be managed easily without disrupting the patient’s activities. A detailed health questionnaire is also completed by the patient which includes general assessment, patient’s expectations and requirements of the procedure.

The treatment itself takes less than 15 minutes; timings also depends upon the numbers of areas being treated. Before starting the procedure, the skin is cleaned and mapped out using a white pencil. A local anaesthetic, usually lignocaine with or without adrenaline is injected along the planned lines. Threads are inserted into the skin using aspinal needle. After the procedure, the skin is cleaned again, and a skin coloured tape is applied to the skin to keep the threads intact. The tape is removed after 3 days in an upward direction.

What happens after the treatment?
After the treatment some bruising, swelling and puckering are expected, these things might distort or cover the effects of the thread lift. The swelling and bruising can take up to 3 weeks to settle down. You cannot have further facial skin tightening, collagen boosting, or laser treatments until after the doctor’s advice. You should avoid heavy exertions for about 2 to 3 weeks. During the first few weeks after the procedure, take pain medications as necessary. You should not touch or wash your face for 12 hours after the treatment; pulling down the face is strictly prohibited for three weeks. Apply ice for at least 30 minutes 3-4 times a day for 5 days. Religiously use your prescribed antiseptic cream following the treatment. Also, take the prescribed antibiotic for the recommended period of time. Avoid touching the open injection spots until they heal and close by themselves. Regularly check for signs of increased redness, inflammation or heat on the site of injection; these are the classic signs of infection. Sometimes, a thread may work its way out of the skin and may look like a very fine hair. Immediately contact your clinic for review, who will check the thread for the trim or necessary treatment. Before going for the treatment, check the credentials of the cosmetic doctor. Doctors in the UK who have taken PDO training London courses are considered prestigious in the industry.
