One way to start is by going to Google's AdWords site.

More specifically, go to Google's AdWords Keyword Tool.

eMarketing is correct its a good indicator... but let me quickly add that if you have been affected by Google and its updates and you are concerned for recovery join the google webmasters blog... if you want a link to a video for the Disavow tool and when to use it then send me a message

This is quite the question. If you believe you have been hit by penguin or panda updates, I need a bit more information. There are a lot of reasons you may have lost rankings.

Please post your url (do not include the http: // or the www just the domain name)

In the meantime here are some things to be aware of and consider.

Where is your website hosted? Google hurt tons of non-US based companies with the penguin update. They started doing target location matching to give people results closer to where they live. One of the ways google did this was by using location matching of your webhost. So if you are hosting with a hosting company based in India - you are going to have a really hard time targeting buyers in the US. Of if the webhosting is a uk company, you are going to have a really hard time targeting Chinese users. This REALLY hurts none US businesses targeting US clients and customers.

Longtail keyword based domains are being attacked by google. If your website used a domain like "learnaboutforexinvesting.com" because you knew that "learn about forex investing" was a highly search term in google, that used to give you GREAT results. Google has begun to stop this practice. No longer will a long term domain name get the long term keyword without doing other SEO techniques.

These are just two of many many things that could have caused you to lose rankings, but I shall await your URL before I do any real evaluating.
