Some say it's good, some say it's not.

What do you say? I really would like to understand the risks and benefits. The different types of coral calcium... if there is such a thing as "organic" coral calcium. If we need it, where can we get it.

Tell me everything you know about coral calcium... please?

I see Coral Calcium advertised as being able to cure everything from indigestion to cancer by altering the bodies PH. However, what I was told by my Doctor who is a D.O. is that by providing the body with more calcium than needed you can run the risk of developing kidney stones, kidney failure etc. Anyone else hear this?

I also found an interesting article on Coral Calcium (just to provide a more informed point of view) on quackwatch.org

I have done some research and here is what I found:

(I have to divide it in 2 parts it's too long for one post.)

Article from Wikipedia

Dubious health claims
There have been many unsubstantiated claims made regarding coral calcium, perhaps the most controversial of which is that taking coral calcium can cure cancer by increasing "body pH." Scientific studies have been performed indicating that cancer cells cannot survive at sufficiently high pH levels. What the marketers of coral calcium usually fail to mention is that these studies were conducted in-vitro and not on living tissue. The reason for this is that the pH level required to kill cancer cells also kills healthy human cells.
Another problem with the "body alkalinization" idea is that the body pH doesn't change, regardless of how much calcium carbonate is ingested. The human body can only function properly within a narrow pH range, and if alkalinizing agents such as CaCO3 are ingested, the body promptly excretes the alkaline components in urine. So, people who attempt to increase the pH of their bodies are really only succeeding in raising the pH of their urine. The same applies if acidic foods are ingested in that the urine becomes more acidic. Additionally, it can be dangerous for people with certain medical conditions (such as kidney failure) to take excess coral calcium.
Calcium itself is an essential mineral for human life, and coral calcium is an effective source of it, though by no means the only one. While the calcium component of coral calcium is identical to any other limestone deposit, fossilized coral reefs may contain trace minerals helpful to the human body, though it's unlikely that a well-nourished individual would be deficient in any of these minerals.

Nature's Benefit Barefoot Coral Calcium Plus

on drugstore.com

Since I've been taking the Barefoot coral calcium, I no longer have heel pain from plantar fasciitis. It's amazing that this calcium formula eased the pain and eliminated the need for pain meds.
-- Joy T, Spartanburg, SC

I started using this coral calcium when I went to the diet doctor to lose weight after having 4 kids, and much to my amazement, taking 3 of these capsules a day has actually helped me lose 29 & 1/2 lbs. so far! I only need to lose another 10 lbs so I will continue taking these amazing things even after I get to my desired weight because they give me energy that I didn't have before, and when I don't take them (forget sometimes), I feel pretty lousy so I know they are helping me! Thanks Mr. Barefoot, for such a great product! -- Tawnya L., Memphis, TN

My left knee was a constant source of pain. That is until I tried Barefoot Coral Calcium. I will not say the pain is gone, but it is in the background far enough that daily activities like stairs (both up and down) are no longer difficult! Getting up from of a sitting position is also much better. I plan to stay with them.

I would really like to find some unbiased information. Just facts. I've read the scam articles especially pertaining to Robert Barefoot. I wonder if there is any research out there, not intended to prove a particular company a scam, and not a company promoting or selling the product.

Is there any unbiased research out there? Gosh, if there is, I sure can't find it! LOL

It seems to be hard to find unbiased information on lots of subjects, especially ones pertaining to alternative health.

Unfortunately the scam ones make most of the news.

So it seems Joanne. I have heard how coral calcium is the best, to its a complete scam, and nothing in between LOL. The latest information I have received is that there are 2500 different species of coral calcium.

I know one herbalist, whose opinions I truly trust, who says that there is no such thing as organic coral calcium... because it is not a plant... then from biological doctor I also trust, I hear that some of those species of coral calcium IS derived from plants.

The doctor has no interest in being "pro" coral calcium, in that she does not sell or promote it. Her's is completely an alternative doctor's opinion. I find the post here by Taisa, regarding a vegetarian's vew point most interesting as well.

I am so completely confused! I'm holding out hope that someone will come across this thread and provide some more input!

This is just something that I heard not to long ago, so don't hold me
to this, but years ago during the calcium craze. When it could cure
anything, the pharmaceutical company's took advantage of this by
manufacturing calcium supplements of lower quality with additives
and not much calcium that caused a lot of ill effects in people and this
is one reason there is so much controversy on the subject.

Candy

People that had problems when taking these supplements never
really understood that, and still believe it was calcium that caused
certain effects, not realizing that they were not getting true calcium
supplements just who knows what getting passed off as calcium.
