International aerospace giant The Boeing Co. (BA - Analyst Report) announced that it received orders for fifteen Next-Generation 737s from Turkish Airlines. The order comprises two different models of 737, ten 737-800 and five 737-900 extended range (ER) airplanes, having an average list-price value of more than $1.2 billion.

The next-generation 737 has been popular among airline operators since its introduction in 1997. Boeing continues to upgrade the airplane, and the airplanes, which will be delivered to Turkish Airlines between mid-2011 and early 2012, will be fitted with new 737 Boeing Sky Interior and will come equipped with the latest aerodynamic and engine changes, reducing the fuel consumption further by 2%.

The Next-Generation 737 airplanes from Boeing are in hot demand and, to cope with  anticipated higher orders, the company has increased the production rate of this airplane twice in the recent past. Boeing aims to churn out 38 airplanes per month from the second quarter of 2013.

The popularity of the 737 model is also reflected in the net order for commercial airplanes. The 737 leads the race for bookings as on March 29, 2011 with 46 airplanes followed by 777 with 45 airplanes. Until February 2011, out of the total deliveries of 61 commercial airplanes, 49 were of the 737 model.

We believe the improvement in the commercial airplane market is self-evident from Boeing's continuous success in securing more orders.  In this week alone, Boeing received orders for ten 777-300 extended range (ER) from the aviation unit of General Electric Co. (GE - Analyst Report), which is followed by the current order for fifteen 737 airplanes.

Boeing's closest international peer in the commercial airplane market is France based Airbus. Airbus outpaced Boeing when it received an order from Indian low cost carrier Indigo for 180 eco-efficient Airbus A320 aircraft of which 150 will be A320neo’s and 30 will be A320s. However, Boeing is gradually catching up with its successive order wins for its commercial models.

Chicago-based Boeing Co. currently has a Zacks #3 Rank (short-term Hold rating). We also maintain a long-term Neutral rating on the stock.
