One day it occurred to me that it's not the big, obvious fears that keep you small. When you're scared of a second heart attack, you know exactly what to do and you do it.

But when you have persistent and undefined fear, it's like an invisible monster in the dark. You lie down, hold your breath and wait for it to go away.

Let's say you put off calling a potential client because you feel like you're not ready. Or you don't confront someone on your team because you're worried about their reaction. You allow yourself to be distracted by heavy work and other less important and more comfortable matters.

But those "I'm not sure I'm ready" and "worried about his reaction" are vague thoughts. Until you clarify exactly what you're worried about might happen, you're stuck. You can't do anything but avoid dealing with it because "it" is just a shadow.

Clarify your fears and they will largely disappear.

Ask yourself, "What am I unsure about about this prospect?" "How specifically might this team member react? And why am I worried about that?" Your brain will give you answers.

Perhaps you are not sure if you have a product that meets your needs. And you are worried about losing your interest in NWM forever. Maybe you're worried that your dealer will take your feedback personally instead of the way you want it to.

OK, now, like that heart attack, you can do something about it.

Why do we allow ourselves to be controlled by the fears of the shadows?

If the fears that really chain us are just ghosts, why do we allow them to control us?

Two reasons...

First, what concerns us makes sense to us at the time. If you see what looks like a monster in the dark, you're going to hide.

Second, we are too stressed to think clearly.

Here's how to turn on the light to make your fears go away:

The hardest part of clearing our fears is relaxing enough to see them objectively. It's hard to catch you in the moment.

So schedule this for several times a week:

Sit down with a pencil and paper and write down the answer to this question: What worries and stresses me right now?

Look at your list and choose the three biggest monsters and clarify them: "What's really the worst that can happen here?"

Then ask, "What can I do to avoid the worst case scenario?" Usually, you'll find that there's a simple, small next step you can take that will get you going in the right direction. Schedule the next small step.

Immediately, you will feel clear and confident because you have turned on the light.

The monster is gone. Now you are free to grow and achieve your dreams.
