MUMBAI -- British Airways PLC said it has entered into a codesharing agreement with Kingfisher Airlines Ltd., under which both carriers will use each other's flight network as part of their expansion.

British Airways and Kingfisher will use each others codes on flights to and from India, Sri Lanka, the U.K. and Europe from Sept. 15, the London-based carrier said Saturday.

A codesharing agreement allows one airline to use another's flight code on its own ticket, thus allowing its passengers to travel on the other airline's flights.

Carriers get into such agreements when they want to expand their network, without actually incurring costs of deploying their own fleet.

British Airways passengers flying into the Indian cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai will also be able to fly to Kochi, Coimbatore, Kolkata and Goa on code-shared flights with Kingfisher.

Kingfisher--which only has flights to London from Delhi and Mumbai--will now connect Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Amsterdam, Brussels, Dusseldorf, Lisbon and Paris through code-shared flights with British Airways.
