Get More Use From Your APSense Signature

Members of my groups know that I frown on using shortened urls on advertisement posts. Because I don't feel it is good to lead people on wild goose chases. And it always better to be upfront.
But, I have found a good use for them. In our signatures here, alot of members like myself highlight our groups or blogs. Well, both my article links were 42 characters...by using tinyurl.com (there are tons of these free services) I shaved off 17 characters on each, so that was 34 for both. In alot of situations that may not be much. But, here at APSense where you have 100 character limit, saving 34 characters is alot!
And you aren't really hiding anything, as the original link said apsense article #xxxxxx . So it isn't like you are adding to the mystery..lol... I hope this helps some of you to get more use out of your signatures.
Take care, Lynn

I don't usually click on short or tracking url's (unless i know the promoter well). Its easy to hide malicious code in url's which self loads onto a users computer once you click on the link. One positive difference with tinyurl is you can set it to go to the tiny url site which then displays the link you will be visiting... if it looks dodgy - nothing is lost. Great idea when it comes to sig links... and i would only use tinyurl for this. Nov 10th 2007 15:22 |

Eric, I am the same way, I too only click on tiny urls from people I know and trust. I just thought it would help those struggling with the 100 character limit. Another reason your online reputation is important :) Lynn Nov 10th 2007 15:30 |

Something that Pete pointed out in another group is that if Search Engine Marketing is a key focus, then short url's (although handy for gaining extra characters in signatures) would probably defeat the purpose... Nov 11th 2007 12:28 |

Eric, Very true. Like I have said, I do not recommend using them online in general. They are just for making better use of the character limit here in APSense. As I don't depend on my signature for business, it works great for me. If members are using signatures for their business they should use actual links. I use mine for blogs and articles, as I noticed alot of members do. Lynn Nov 12th 2007 08:56 |
