what is the name for them and what are the used for?

Hello,

I assume you mean the Social Bookmarking links. del.icio.us, digg, etc. These are places you can add the page you are viewing to a social bookmark site.

If you are referring to the images under the "Recent Readers" heading, they are the people who recently visited your article.
