There are no basic steps to a digiral marketing campaign. First of all there is nothing basic involved when it comes to marketing correctly. There is also no A to Z guide that will work for everyone. Every single marketing plan must be fine tuned based on the company and the personality of the person presenting it.
My recommendation is to pick a digital media and learn the ins and outs of it completely. Don't stop with that particular form of media until you know every detail there is to know, then move on to the next.
So lets take video marketing as an example. It starts out basically enough. You create a video channel on youtube. You upload your fitst video, you go around commenting on things getting friends, you get subscribers, you keep working the system until you figure out how to gain search ranking with your videos. You setup a video blog. You learn how to rank that blog. You learn about various hosting sites like vimeo, dailymotion, etc. You build on each of these sites. You embed various videos in your blog from the different sites you host on. You share the video's on the major social networks, business networks, and niche networks specific to your topic.
.... and this is just video marketing.....
then mix in podcasting, images, articles, building social presence, etc..... marketing is no A to Z start here and stop their topic. There is no basic steps involved. Its simply pick a topic, and dive in head first.
