This is from a press release that I wrote for ibotoolbox.

Astaxanthin is, according to Dr. Mercola, the most powerful carotenoid that helps fight the signs of aging and supports joint and skeletal health, among other great health benefits. Some claim that in people, astaxanthin has the power to reduce inflammation and cell damage caused by oxidation, which then helps preserve the central nervous system, the eyes, skin and joints. Astaxanthin is also known for its positive effect on heart health.

Also, according to Dr. Mercola, astaxanthin is a “phenomenally beneficial supplement”. He said when people take as little as 10 mgs a day cataracts can be prevented.

Trials on people are limited. However, one trial done in May 2010, about 30 young women were given astaxanthin supplements for eight weeks, and compared them to a smaller group given a placebo. They concluded that DNA damage was significantly lower among the women taking the supplement. In August 2010, Japanese researchers found that the supplement raised levels of HDL, the good type of cholesterol, and reduced triglyceride levels in 62 men, who took it for 12 weeks.
