There is a lot of talk these days happening about cloud computing or cloud hosting & Cloud Servers. Many webmasters, business and companies are using these words loosely to discuss either VPS (Virtual Private server) or cloud servers (public or private). But, what does these terms mean? You will surely see much difference when you look at the price factor, so understanding what each of these solutions are will help you in your hunt to decide the ideal option for you or your business.

Below we have described each and even few of their pros and cons.

Virtual Private Server (VPS)

Explanation: One physical server/machinespited into many smaller server pieces that each of them act as their own virtual server environment.

Pros:

  • Normally less expensive than cloud servers.

  • No information, files or data access happens between VPS clients on the same shared server.

  • If required one VPS can be rebooted without affecting other VPSs on the same server.

Cons:

  • VPS do not provide high-availability. If physical machine fails, all VPS's on that machine fail.

  • There can be few security issues. If a customer on same server does not take security factor seriously, and gets hacked or infected with virus, then your website could be negatively affected.

  • All the resources are shared between all users, therefore, RAM, web space, bandwidth and CPU performance can be affected if another site on the same server is demanding a higher load.

  • VPS's are not scalable. Storage space is based on physical machine limitations. Once you meet your maximum VPS efficiency, you have to either purchase more server space or look into other server options.

Cloud Servers

Explanation: Cloud servers uses multiple web servers connected with each in a cluster which is backed by SAN based storage. Users using a cloud platform will benefit from the many servers because they will receive unlimited storage space, extreme bandwidth/transfer, managed load balancing and no ties to a specific portion of hardware. The primary difference between public clouds and private clouds are in public, the cluster is multi-tenant and a private cloud is a single client.

Pros:

  • More Scalable – Add more server capacity in just a moment notice.

  • Custom Build Infrastructure - Users can easily include custom network architecture, firewalls, load balancing and IP deployment.

  • High Availability - if any physical server stop working, cloud servers are automatically migrated to another physical server without experiencing an outage or downtime.

  • Burstable Computing Facilities - no concern about lagging RAM, Server space or CPU power, even if another cloud user's load increases.

  • Totally secure since you virtually have your personal server. If a user's site on the shared cloud gets hacked or gets a malware or virus, your cloud server will be fully separated without any risk to your data.

  • Every user on the cloud can select their specific OS (operating system).

  • Unmetered storage as it is based on SAN storage.

Cons:

  • Normally, a little more expensive than VPS Server .

As you can see, the cloud hosting servers are a little light on the con side. And, if you are going to use a shared cloud server, the cost is not exceptionally more than a VPS server and there is much upside.

I hope these points have helped clear up many of the differences between VPS and cloud servers, but if you have any further queries or would like to discuss more about Cloud or VPS, simply visit@ www.UpdatedReviews.in and we would be happy to help.
