Why You Should Invest in Warehouse Shelving and Racking

by Taylor Haskings Word Guru Extraordinaire

Good management of inventory in every organization is the ease of acquisition and retrieval of items in the warehouse at request. Systematic classification of inventory, security, storage space and organization of a warehouse are key factors to be considered.

In a very busy warehouse, checking in and checking out of inventory is the main economic activity therefore, appropriate shelving of items according to their classification is very important. A well-managed warehouse with organized shelving techniques will operate efficiently and effectively while a poorly managed warehouse with unreliable shelving systems will suffer inconsistency and delays, making it very expensive to operate and run.

Factors to Consider Before Shelving

To make the system whole, different subsystems with different functionality are put together to serve the purpose. In this regard to build a fruitful and cost effective warehouse from scratch, understanding shapes and sizes of inventory is a fundamental consideration. For this reason, shelf flames are assembled and joined in a systematic manner to create a compatible space for inventory.

Steel frames are the best building structure materials that every warehouse should consider putting in place. If a company is planning to set a robust warehouse in place. For instance, steel frames are strong to withstand heavy items for long term bases. Each steel frame is designed in a classy way for easy and strong connection without additional resources required while assembling the structure.

The connection formed is referred to as the Teardrop System. Connected frames form straight and upright patterns that everyone will love to see. Connected frames in rows and columns create required storage space for every item in the inventory. If the organization stocks large items in the warehouse, they can use wire mesh decking. Wire mesh decking is quick and fast to connect. Since the warehouse storage is expensive the wire mesh decking is the ideal shelving system for bulky and heavy inventory.

Consequently, an organization that deals with small and numerous items should use solid decking frames to avoid dropping off of these items.

Types of Warehouse Shelving

Different warehouses will opt for different types of shelving techniques depending on items that they deal with. First to save on cost and limited space. For instance if the company distributes large scale items it might need to adapt a selective pallet shelving system. Shelves are constructed in a horizontal configuration to withstand the weight and bulkiness of the items. Usually selective shelving is open ended to allow selective access to items from a variety.

A Cantilever Shelving is another type of shelving that can withstand long and heavy items. For example storage of timber, pipes, steel metals and any other long materials. Many warehouses use a combination of selective pallet shelves and cantilever shelving depending on the products they are dealing with.

Safety Measures in a Warehouse

Disaster management and prevention in a warehouse should be clearly documented to reduce the risk of accident or calamities to occur. Every warehouse should be fitted with functional fire fighting equipment like fire extinguishers and high pressure, emergency water outlets, illustrated exit points and fire assembly points. Regular drills and training should be conducted periodically to create awareness.

Warehouses that have adopted a selective pallet shelving system, should use materials of high-density to prevent shelves from collapsing due to heavy weight of the items. Warehouses that have adopted a Cantilever Shelving system should be designed to hold items with closed ends to prevent items from failing.

As always it is best to plan for any incidents that may occur. Alarms for instance, smoke and fire sensors should be put in place to detect fire within the warehouse. And finally security personnel in charge of the warehouse should be alert and cautious in every activity taking place around the warehouse premise and reporting any emerging issue to the warehouse manager.

Warehouse storage is a critical part of many businesses and should be planned in great detail. This will allow the maximum efficiency in storing and retrieving items. Some warehouses might consider a mix of the different types of warehouse shelving and or racking that might be used. Consider what common traffic throughout the warehouse might look like and plan accordingly.
