What is tooth pulp? What is the function of tooth pulp?

by Pham Tu Anh General
1. What is dental pulp?
Unlike enamel and dentin, the pulp contains many nerves and blood vessels. The pulp is the most sensitive part of the tooth structure.

The pulp is located in the dentin cavity, protected by two layers of dentin and enamel. At the same time, the pulp and dentin and enamel are closely linked. For example, when eating sour food, the dentinal tubules transmit signals to the tooth pulp and nerves.

2. Structure of tooth pulp

Since the pulp is mainly used to contain nerves and blood vessels, the structure of the pulp is very different. The pulp consists of two interlocking areas:

Root canals are thin fibers of tissue that lead from the pulp chamber to the apex of the tooth.
The pulp chamber is the cavity inside the crown of the tooth.
Dental pulp has a complex structure and will change with the development of the body. Specifically, at different age stages, the tooth pulp has a different structure.

However, regardless of the structure, due to careful protection, the pulp is a sterile environment.

3. How many pulps does each tooth have?

Each tooth will usually have from 1 to 4 pulps (specifically the canals). This depends on the structure and function of each type of tooth.

Usually incisors have 1 root canal, while premolars have 2 canals. In case of molars, there may be 3-4 canals.

Determining how many canals there are helps to improve the effectiveness of the treatment process (if any).

4. What is the function of the tooth pulp?

As Hamident asserted, the pulp is the most important component of the tooth. Because of the special structure to store the canals, the pulp has certain functions:

Stimulus transmission to the brain: Hot/cold sensations as a conditioned response to tooth sensitivity are an example.

Supports the nourishment and repair of dentin: Unlike enamel, the pulp contains blood vessels that can transport nutrients. Thereby helping to strengthen teeth from the inside and support against external agents.

Maintaining life for teeth: The pulp is the protective purpose of tooth enamel and dentin. When the tooth pulp dies, the tooth will lose its function and gradually lead to tooth loss.
