What Does It Mean When My Heart Skips a Beat?

by Susan George Urgent Care Services

Skipping a heartbeat, well it’s mostly used as a metaphor in the songs where when a person sees their lover their heart skips a beat means they are awestruck and all. But in medical terms the correct word for it would be Heart Palpitations, although not very harmful, but heart palpitations can make a person feel worried about having the disease and can cause stress in some. It’s almost very normal on every person to have this feeling, and in some it can be for many times a day and can be troublesome if a person is old aged or has diabetic problems etc. you can search for Urgent Care West New York if you feel like seeing a doctor for this problem.

Reasons for Heart Palpitations

The causes for heart palpitation can be natural or sometimes can be due to the activities or habits that you are involved in, like:

·       Premature contractions: When the atria on the upper chamber of the heart contracts at a faster speed than normal, then the entire cardiovascular system responsible for pumping blood efficiently out of the heart is disturbed, which thus causes palpitations.

·       Atrial Fibrillations: When the upper heart chamber shows irregular and rapid contractions, it could be a symptom of palpitation and this one could be a serious condition, in this case a doctor’s recommendation should be taken.

·        Sinus Abnormalities: The sinus node of the heart, which ensures that the heart follows a regular and proper heartbeat when stops functioning properly, it could be another cause of palpitations.

·       Alcohol: Another reason apart from the natural disfunctioning of the heart are mostly the ones caused by our habits, one of which is alcohol intake. Alcohol lowers blood pressure, which means the heart has to work harder to maintain a proper blood flow, this can sometimes result in the heart skipping a beat or two.

·       Stress: Having depression or anxiety can cause your heart to flitter, or in case of a devastating event, loss of someone, heartbreak etc can feel like the palpations.

 Treatment for Heart Palpitations

Most of the time this problem goes away on its own and does not cause much harm to a person but if you still feel uncomfortable with it, then you can perform various practices or undergo some treatments, such as:

·       Cut back on caffeine and alcohol intake, and smoking. Try to avoid heavy exercising and if you do then take a little longer breaks between them.

·       Take care of your body, stay hydrated, eat good and nutritious food and perform regular exercising.

·       Go for regular medical checkups and meet the doctors at your Closest Emergency Hospital Dunellen to make sure that you are not suffering from any bigger problem.

·       Try to avoid anxiety, stress and depression and try to remain as positive and practical as you can.

·       Get enough sleep and drink plenty of fluids to stay properly hydrated and relaxed.
