Top 10 things to do in Muscat, Oman

by Rubi Ahsan Associate S.E.O Consultant

Muscat is a hive of modern and traditional culture and design that makes for some incredible places to experience, and it is overshadowed by the imposing Al Hajar Mountains.

If you've never been to Oman or the Middle East, Muscat has some incredible sights that you should think about seeing.

This is particularly true because it has a rich history that you can explore and doesn't feel as glitzy as other Middle Eastern cities like Dubai.

In light of this, I wanted to share some of the top things to do in Muscat for your upcoming vacation. Have a wonderful time.

1.) See the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

As the sun sets; the immense golden dome of the Grand Mosque is lit up and creates an ethereal glow that you can't miss.

This stunning structure, which serves as a significant mosque in Muscat (and, obviously, in Oman), is exquisitely constructed and commands a commanding presence over the city.

Inside, the mosque's incredible attention to detail is evident; the main dome has a stunning blue pattern.

It is undoubtedly one of the most stunning structures in the area and one of the top things to do in Muscat.

2.) Watch a show at the Royal Opera House

Next to the Sultan Grand Mosque, this massive building, which was finished in 2011, is regarded as Muscat's most beautiful building.

A multitude of pointed arches and symmetrical towers decorate the front facade of this exquisite opera house, which is constructed of white marble and stone. Make sure to reserve tickets for a truly amazing performance if you have any evenings available!

Alternatively, if opera isn't your thing, embark on a guided tour of the Al Hajar Mountains. One of the top things to do in Muscat is this.

Oh, and make sure to reserve your Muscat tours before visiting the city. There are many interesting places to see, such as Wadi Shab and private excursions to Wadi Bani Khaled.

3.) Explore Bait Al Zubair

After spending the morning at the Grand Mosque (above), spend the afternoon exploring Bait Al Zubair.

The Bait Al Zubair Museum in Muttrah is home to a sizable collection of antiquity from the surrounding area. The exquisite display of traditional Khanjar ceremonial daggers that have been gold-gilded and a full-scale reconstruction of an Omani village and souk are among the noteworthy items.

However, you might want to skip this one if you don't find museums exciting. There are a ton of other exciting things to do in Muscat that won't get boring!

To learn more about Muscat's fascinating history, you can easily reserve a spot on this half-day guided tour. It includes some of the best locations, including the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and the ancient markets.

Be sure to make your reservations before you travel. You don't want to arrive in Muscat and discover that every tour is already taken.

4.) See the Old Fort and Swim at Qurum Beach

A brief visit to the beach is almost mandatory due to the oppressively hot weather that Muscat frequently experiences (at least, that's my justification).

One of the best stretches of sand in Muscat is Shatti Al Qurum Beach, which offers miles of fine dining establishments and cafes to explore. Here is where you should go if you want to make the most of Muscat's sunshine and the sea.

You could also pay a visit to the Old Fort, which is perched on the edge of the shoreline if you still want to go to the coast but avoid swimming in the water.

5.) Take a day trip to Nizwa

The ancient city of Nizwa is located a few hours' drive inland from Muscat.

The tower from the 17th century still guards the ancient city, which was once a major trade route through the area. Although technically not Muscat, you shouldn't miss it if you're in the area.

Visit the souk where some of the best silver jewelry in the nation is made on a day trip there by car or with a guide.

6.) Indulge in some retail therapy?

All right, I don't enjoy shopping while on vacation, but if you want to escape the intense heat and indulge in a little retail therapy, head over to the Oman Avenues Mall.

Many of the same brands you'll find in London and New York are available at the mall itself, all coolly enclosed in air conditioning! Ha!

If all the shopping has made you hungry, visit Ubhar Bistro, which serves the tastiest harissa and showa.

7.) Explore Mutrah Corniche

Located about 15 minutes to the east of the city, Mutrah is a commune of Muscat. A well-maintained seafront and promenade known as Muttrah Corniche can be found in this charming coastal town.

Enjoy a fine meal and drink at one of the many high-caliber restaurants and bars lining the seafront, or take a stroll by the water and take in the expanse of the Gulf of Oman.

This region of Muscat is a great choice for a night out because it has a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere. It is one of the best things to do in Muscat.

8.) See the sperm whale at Muscat Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum in Oman focuses on the geology, wildlife, and landscape of this breathtaking region, unlike many of the country's other museums, which are more interested in the history and culture of Oman.

Along with the enormous fossil and taxidermy collection, the museum features a magnificent whale exhibit that includes a massive sperm whale skeleton that washed up on the shore in the 1980s.

If museums aren't your thing, venture outside where there are a ton of small shops to browse.

9.) See the Muscat Gate

This museum, which is outside of Muscat inside the actual grand city gate, combines beautiful architecture with educational exhibits.

The structure spans the quad carriageway leading into Muscat and features massive stone archways.

You can find a fascinating selection of exhibits regaling the history of Muscat's development inside the museum.

10.) Explore the Mutrah Souq

Visit the Souq in the Mutrah commune for an authentic shopping experience. This vibrant market, which can be found right behind the Corniche, is bursting with stalls selling pottery, fresh fruit, clothing, and other goods.

The aroma of incense will fill your nostrils, and you will be amazed at the sheer number of trinkets to purchase. If you want to find a genuine souvenir to take home, it's unquestionably among the best things to do in Muscat.

Your nose will be assaulted by the incredible scent of incense. Just remember to bring an extra bag because I can almost guarantee that you'll buy a lot while you're here.
