Three Innovations Possible in Law and Technology

by Richa Jha Asistent Manager
There is a popular quote by George Bernard Shaw –‘’Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.’’

When it comes to the world of law, ‘law is change’. It is not slow-moving or disconnected from our daily lives. Neither are lawyers hesitant to change. In fact, new technology brings in new ways to success for those with a law career. Be it the use of digital law diary app or e-filing system, anything that improves access to justice or makes work easier, is always welcome by law professionals.

Over a century ago, new practice techniques were unimaginable in the legal arena. But technological innovations have fundamentally changed the way this profession is practiced. It has also impacted the new students studying for CLAT examination to pursue this career option. The innovation from written laws of 1750 B.C. to writing in digital law diary app speaks volumes of this evolution.

Here are the three innovations possible in law and technology:

1.      Artificial Intelligence –

We have already seen the potential that mobile applications like lawyer’s diary or law mock papers online app can have. But with further usage of Artificial Intelligence, the Big Data analysis could change forever. AI in judgements to predict quantum of damages, or possible outcome of suits based on parameters like statutory limits can be used. Along with name of judge, age and designation of applicant/petitioner, etc.

AI can also be deployed to identify experts, or arbitrators who might hold a favourable opinion in a case. This could increase the probability of a favourable decision.

2.    Natural Language Processing –

Although many applications and software have begun to help clients. A technology can be developed that will apply Natural Language Processing (NLP). Draft contracts based on client feedback or requirements can be made with the help of NLP.

Courts registries can use artificial neural networks to know whether the procedural formalities are met while filing an application. Thereby reducing human intervention and giving faster work rate.

3.    Cloud-Based Platform –

Thanks to the cloud-based platform innovation in legal technology, workflow will soon be altered. Clients would manage their own internal business processes. They will also handle the legal services that might be part of it.

Cloud-based platform would help develop calendaring and blogging capabilities too.

No body can guess 100% how legal technology change will shape the legal industry in the next few years. But firms with legal career want to stay ahead of the curve. They want re-shape the traditional legal practice. And to do so, above mentioned innovations might be of value.
