The Importance of Priming for Centrifugal Pumps

by Sweta Shah HR Executive in Ambica Machine Tools
With the discovery of water as an essential means needed for survival billions of years ago, humans realised the importance of water, and also came to know of the drastic, even fatal consequences if the water was not available (thanks to droughts and salty water). It is proven that humans can indeed stay without food for days at a stretch, but cannot go about living without water for more than 3 days. Such is the importance of water.

Not only for drinking purposes, water is needed for a lot of different purposes.

In places where the water level is too beneath the ground level, a centrifugal pump is required. A centrifugal pump is a machinery device that runs on the principle of centrifugal force; which is a kind of a rotational force. So, a rotational energy is created. This rotational energy could be provided by a motor or an engine. The rotational energy then converts the rotational kinetic energy to the hydrodynamic energy.

The centrifugal pump is used for getting water supply, protect fire protection systems, provide for sump drainage, etc. Basically, the centrifugal pump can be used for an array of liquids and is not just limited to water.

Priming of centrifugal pumps

When talking about centrifugal pumps, priming is a process that refers to preparing the pump for proper functioning. Priming is the very first step that is taken up to make the centrifugal pump operational and working with full fervour.

Centrifugal pumps are two variants, the self-priming centrifugal pumps (that take up the work of priming on their own), and the nonself-priming centrifugal pumps (that need to be primed manually).

If the centrifugal pump is not primed, air may get into the pump, which may stop the working of the pump altogether.

During priming of the pump, the impeller of the centrifugal pump is completely submerged in liquid in a way that not even a bubble of air can enter it.

So basically, priming is a physical process that aims at removing all air from the vicinity of the pump to ensure a hindrance-free working for it.

All kinds of displacement pumps are self-priming variants and need not require external working or starting operation.

Latest technologies

For keeping adept with constantly innovating technology, centrifugal pump suppliers need to use the latest technology as per times, combine it with the best manufacturing standards and test in multiple times to check for any faults.

Centrifugal pump suppliers in India are coming up with modern designs for centrifugal pumps, that are interchangeable, can be removed easily and are super easy on care and maintenance; that is, they are sturdy enough to work for longer periods of time without giving any trouble.
