The Engineering and Design Phase of Commercial Solar Panel Installation

by Bill Giglio CEO

Prior to the engineering and design phase of commercial solar panel installation, the basis for the scheme of the design is typically established. You typically are going to enter into the engineering and design phase with an overview of the placement and orientation of your solar model. This isn’t to say that changes won’t be made to the basic plan, but these changes are typically going to be minor, allowing a good foundation from which to work.

Once the design process begins, the "scope lock" is typically established early on. More details are added to the plan later on. This is the phase in which the primary placement and plans are going to be reviewed by all parties involved. Decisions are going to be made about the placement of the modules and how the panels are going to be connected in regards to the electrical grid. It is during this stage that expectations on the form of the final installation are set.

Permit drawings are the next step of this phase. Eventually, the permit drawings are developed into the final construction drawings. You are going to be able to review and approve the designs that are being used throughout the solar installation process. You are typically going to use the project manager for the solar equipment’s provider as your main point of contact. You will communicate with him in order to acquire updates about the project and for all other forms of necessary communication.

Going through the process of applying for the permits that you need is part of this phase as well. Most solar developers that you work with handle this process so that you don’t have to. This removes the stress of having to figure out what permits you need and how to apply for them from your shoulders. However, you need to understand that not all jurisdictions have the same level of openness when it comes to the concept of solar projects. This means that some are more open than others. It won’t take long for you to understand how the building department for your location works after the drawings has been submitted. Expert commercial solar installation companies typically have the ability to foresee the preferences of individual permit-issuing officials and will know how best to deal with these agencies. They are able to work with you and guide you through each step of the process and help ensure that you understand what you are doing and what is going on.

It is important that you work with professionals during the engineering and design phase of solar installation. This is because they know more about the process and can help ensure that everything runs smoothly. They can also contribute to ensuring that nothing is left out and that you understand what is going on. Professionals can make the task much easier for you and your business.
