Skilled Regional Visa (Subclass 489)

This subclass visa refers to a points-based visa for skilled workers who can get an Australian state/territory nomination or sponsored by an eligible relative living in a designated are in Australia. This subclass visa is valid for four years and you must live and work in the specified area. A person who is eligible for this visa can live and work permanently with their family. Using SkillSelect you can submit an expression of interest of a valid visa application. Once you are nominated by a state and match all the requirements, you will then be given an invitation to apply. Previously, the Subclass 489 was two different titles: Subclass 475 and Subclass 489. Both the sub classes have now been made into one which is Subclass 190.They have the same requirements and rules that go with.

The initial requirements for this subclass are:

  • be older than 18 and less than 50 years of age when the invitation is issued
  • Nominate an occupation that matches your skills and qualifications and is on the relevant skilled occupation list.
  • have your skills assessed by the relevant assessing authority as suitable for your nominated occupation
  • have at least competent English
  • score at least 60 on the points test
  • Meet the health and character requirements.

The eligible family members for this visa are: your partner, dependent child or a dependent relative.

As this subclass is a state or territory nomination, they require some rules to be met throughout the stay:

  • stay in that state or territory that nominated you for at least two years
  • changes to the address must be informed
  • complete surveys and provide information when asked

This visa allows you and your dependants to:

  • temporarily live and work in a designated regional area in Australia
  • study in a specified regional area of Australia
  • travel in and out of Australia while the visa is valid
  • apply for permanent residence through the Skilled Regional Residence visa (subclass 887) after certain conditions have been met.

A sponsor must be at least 18 years of age who resides in a designated area of Australia at the time of sponsorship as one of the following:

  • an Australian citizen
  • an Australian permanent resident
  • an Eligible New Zealand citizen.

You or your partner must be related to your sponsor as:

  • a child – including a stepchild, or
  • a parent – including a step parent, or
  • a brother or sister – including adoptive or step-sibling, or
  • a niece or nephew – including adoptive or step-niece or nephew, or
  • an aunt or uncle – including adoptive or step-aunt or uncle, or
  • a grandparent or first cousin.

After you get an invitation to apply for this subclass, you will have 60 days to submit an online application. You will only get an invitation if the evidence and information you provide will be relevant to your expression of interest and the occupation nomination you have made on the state.

If you plan to seek permanent residence, you will need to prove that you have spent the specified time in the given area.
