The different types of copper wires and cables include Solid Wire, Stranded Wire and Cables. The Solid wire has a strand of copper either bare or covered with an insulated cover and is generally used in motors and transformers. These types of wire are rigid and do not bend easily and thus is used in permanent, not frequently used and low flex applications. The Stranded wire is typically a group of copper wires twisted or braided together and thus is more flexible and easier to use than the solid wire. Such wire can thus be used in application with vibration because of its increased wire life. The copper cable include two copper wires running side by side and twisted, braided or bonded to form one unit. Plating the copper wire cables with another metal like tin, gold or silver not only reduces oxidation but also increases wire life. Plating also makes soldering easy. Twisted pair cable, owing to its lower costs as compared to the optical fiber or the coaxial cable is preferred as the network cable and is used in data networks of short and medium length connections. Unshielded twisted pair is used in case of telephones, video applications and security cameras. Coaxial cables are used in mainframe computers and Local Area Network connections, internet, microwave transmissions, connectors between radio transmitters and its antenna. Structured wiring helps in handling voice and data simultaneously and thus is used in telephones and internal LAN connections where data can be easily transferred from one computer to the other and that too error free.

Power transmission and distribution is another important application which uses copper wire since copper is the preferred conductor material for underground transmissions. Also, these cables find use in a variety of applications.
