Real Estate Coaching: What it is, Why it Matters and How to Find the Best Program

by Pathlie Lee Business consultant

Whether you are just starting out in the field and you want to learn what it takes to be excellent at your job as a real estate agent, or you’ve spent years in the business and still want to learn more, enrolling in a good training program can make a difference. It can help you address whatever weaknesses you have or even get you to determine what your weaknesses are in the first place. Either way, training puts you in a good position to learn more about yourself and how to fix your weaknesses, so you’ll have none.

What is Coaching?

A real estate coaching program is more than training. Training focuses on developing a person’s skill. Coaching does more than that. It involves mentorship, which is developing the person. Meaning, it’s not just your skills that receive attention, it’s you and your personality. The program seeks to help you improve your skills and your mindset. The way you react to situations or problems also often determines your professional and personal success in life.

Why Does Coaching Matter?

A lot of people have talent. But talent goes to waste if it isn’t applied properly. If you're talented but you don’t know how to react to situations positively, or how to control your emotions, you’ll have a hard time attaining success. One of the first things you learn about life is that things often happen beyond our control. If you can take charge of situations even when you’re upset or bothered, that gives you power over the situation, which matters. Learning how to come up on top even when things disrupt your plans will help you find a way to make things work and contribute to your success. Coaching can do that. It can help you change your mindset, so you’ll know how to control yourself, how to be self-aware, and how to better respond to situations. You won’t lose your head, which will help you make rational decisions that improve the outcome of the situation for you.

How Do I Find the Best One?

In this industry, reputation speaks a lot. Look for coaching pros that have been in the business for years. Their experience and expertise are surely a few of the reasons why they have an excellent reputation. If that reputation is built on fact, then they’re a good option to consider. Be sure to consider fit, too. Does the coaching program fit your style or principles? When you enroll in the program, is that decision aligned with your goals? Will it help you achieve what you want?

What Do I Look For?

There are plenty of signs that indicate you might be dealing with a dodgy coaching professional. If that coach doesn’t have a reputation or has only been in the field for a few months or even less than a year, those are red flags. Also, if you don’t approve of the coach’s strategies and methods, move on to the next. Find a coach with the same values you hold.
