When you back up your Quicken data, it keeps your financial information secure (including reports, passwords, accounts, and attachments). This is a way to keep your records safe in case of computer failure or as a means to move your data from one computer to another.

Note that there is a.QDF extension in a Quicken Data file, while a quicken backup file contains the extension.QDF-Backup (or quicken.backup on Mac).

Important: Cloud backup is not created automatically when you back up your data file. However, the subscription version of Quicken includes 5 GB of online storage with Dropbox, which you can use for your Quicken Backup files.

Problem-solving

If you restore the backup file and open it and the file is empty, you may have opened the wrong file. For help with Quicken files, click here (for Windows) or here (for Mac)

To transfer a backup file from Quicken to Quicken for Windows (or vice versa) for Mac, you must first restore the backup file to the original program and then change it to a new one. For the conversion steps, click here.
If the error "File not compatible" appears, click here.
For Dropbox errors, click here.
