Labor and Delivery- Early and Later Signs of Labor Approaching

by Meenakshi R. Consultant

You’re a pregnant lady and you’ve been waiting for almost 9 months now to bring your child into this world. The labor is the most anticipated time for you. You may have wondered how does it feel to be in labor and how do you actually know that your baby is about to arrive soon.

Signs of labor may start showing up starting from weeks prior to the delivery or even hours before. If differs from one woman to another. The most prominent early and later signs of labor are discussed as below-

  1. Cervix begins to dilate- This is one of the earliest signs of labor. The cervix starts to open up and become thin. This makes it stronger to prepare for the birth of the child.

  2. Lightening or Baby Dropping- Baby dropping means that you can feel the baby slightly pushing down near your pelvis. This gives you more space near your lungs and now you can breathe easily and do not feel breathlessness. This may happen around a couple of weeks prior to the beginning of labor. The lightening is mostly noticed in first time mothers. After this, you may feel an excessive need to urinate at times

  3. Back Pain- You can feel the sensation of slight back pain which comes and goes often. This may continue for a while.

  4. Cramping- Cramping may increase when you feel the baby drop as the labor approaches

  5. Discharge of Mucus- You may have a discharge of mucus as the mucus plug breaks from the cervix when it dilates. This will be like a blob of blood which passes out and may have brownish or pinkish color like old blood.

The symptoms of early labor may last for days and you do not have to rush to the hospital immediately. But it is an indication that your actual labor is approaching quite soon. The initial labor is usually termed as latent, prodromal or early labor. It can be understood by the contractions you start to have and also with the dropping of the baby or lightening. It will be followed by your lower back pain which will indicate that it’s almost time for your baby to be welcomed to the world.

It is recommended that you already have a maternity hospital reserved where you are going for your childbirth. This is just so that you do not have to hunt for hospital in the last moment.
