Know The Differences Between Incense Sticks And Dhoop Sticks

by Neha Gupta Content marketer

Love the fragrance of dhoop and incense sticks at home but can't tell the difference? Before you de-cide to buy dhoop sticks online or check out the various fragrances available, you should know the difference between dhoop and incense in the first place. Read on.

  • The fundamental difference between the two is in the way they look. Incense sticks are usually rolled around a bamboo stick while dhoop sticks can come in cone shapes or chalk-like thick forms.
  • Another difference between dhoop and agarbattis or sticks is that the former takes a longer time to burn when compared to the latter.
  • The composition of dhoop and incense sticks have a slight difference, although some elements are used in both. While dhoop uses extracts from trees like vateria indica and canarium strictum, its processing requires other ingredients like herbs and some amount of ghee. The agarbatti extract is a resin that is also used in a variety of Ayurvedic and beauty treatments. Agarbatti or incense sticks, on the other hand, are made of charcoal, bark, seeds, flowers, wood that is powdered, etc and mixed with essential oils, herbs, resins and some scented chemicals.
  • The scent used in dhoop is a more concentrated form than that of incense sticks. produces more smoke than an agarbatti.
  • Typically, agarbatti sticks are lit during prayer, while dhoop cones can be lit any time, during medi-tation or just to create a soothing ambience at home. Agarbattis are often lit during rituals or prayer.
  • The number of fragrances that agarbattis come in is usually more than that of dhoop. Agarbattis come in scents such as sandalwood, jasmine, lavender, rose, Nag Champa (a combination of san-dalwood and frangipani) etc, while dhoop cones or sticks come in basic scents like sandalwood. The range in agarbatti scents is generally lesser although many manufacturers are changing that trend.
Whether you are lighting incense, make sure you buy from a reputed brand. Reputed brands ensure that the incense is authentic and lasts longer. Fake sticks tend to melt when exposed to sunlight. Also, the smoke that emanates from fake incense can irritate your eyes.
