How Using Standard Rack Servers Can Reduce Energy Consumption

by Kunwar Pal IT Consultant for last 20 years
If you have a very large online business or simply have your server managed by someone else, when you visit the data centre where your server is, you will notice the servers are on racks. The servers tend to heat up and placing them on the floor is never energy efficient nor is it useful to the longevity of the server.

If you have ever been in a data centre, the first thing you will notice is that it is very cool in the room; this is necessary even when all the servers are racked because of the heat that many of the servers can produce. However, most of the server racks today have cooling systems, which means that air is circulating through the racks, which lessens the amount of time the server's fan is blowing in an attempt to monitor temperature. When the server's fan is not constantly in the on position, it reduces the overall consumption of energy by the servers.

Several years ago, before server racks were popular, centres kept their servers off the ground, but normally they kept them on wired portable racks or worse, on cabinetry, which is never a good option for servers because it means that the server will consume more energy by regulating its cooling mechanism.

In addition, the new standard racks had universal power supplies, but if you combine this with a raised floor data centre, you will be using fewer circuits, which translates into less energy. Therefore, the standards racks along with a raised floor reduce clutter and saves money in energy consumption. As long as there is not the air circulating under the floors, which of course is a huge power sucker.

One of the biggest benefits to saving energy consumption in a data centre is the new and improved standard server racks have the capacity to cool more servers for each cabinet of racks, rather than in the past where there were continual hot and cold spots, which ultimately meant more power was being consumed.

With the new standard rack servers, there is no need to air-conditioning units that supplement is the racks cooling unit. This of course, is a huge way in which to reduce energy costs and consumption. In the past, some of the racks had cooling systems, but the room required other air-cooling devices, which meant the data centre was consuming an enormous amount of energy. Many of the newer cooling racks are so advanced that a data centre today, no longer needs a raised floor in order to have a cooling system that is coming through the floor in order to keep the servers cool.

Therefore, today's data centres look very different than just 10 years ago, because a brand new data centre, would not need to add the raised floors along with an additional cooling system. They could simply use the new rack servers with the cooling right inside the rack's cabinets. Data centres have always been thought of as energy hogs, but times have changed and today it is possible to have a fully functional data centre that is energy efficient.

ServerTech.in provide a rack colocation service, which is one or more dedicated equipment racks, power, and network connectivity located in a high availability data centre. This allows clients to remove servers from office environments and put them into a dedicated IT environment.
