How to Get a Breast Pump Through insurance

by Monica Green Health Blogger

So let's talk about something that, as a first-time mom, I experienced. I was not aware of anything, so when you go to your doctor's office, you need to reach a certain amount of weeks before they prescribe the breast pump to be sent to you. So I was confused about where to get a breast pump through insurance?

At my doctor's office, she preferred a DME. So they sent the prescription, and days later, I got an email. The email was telling me, "Hey you have an option of these three pumps.” Now, none of those three pumps were convenient to use. They were all conventional hook-in-the-wall kinds of pumps.

At last, I found one other pump, the 'free me pump,’ but it's challenging to use. It is a pump with hooks, but you still have wires coming out of you because you need to hook to the pump on your side.

The free me pump was $150, which made no sense because it's still not that perfect convenient pump like the LV or the willow pump. Unfortunately, with my firstborn, I could not keep it up for long.

Imagine the DME company (the vendor that supplied the breast pump) made a huge difference in my breastfeeding journey. Unfortunately, I could not pump for too long because I wasn't necessarily educated about the benefits of having better pumps.

Because of that, I could only manage five months’ worth of exclusive breast pumping for my first baby, which changed with my second one. That ended my breastfeeding journey earlier than I would have wanted.

What Role Does DME (Durable Medical Equipment) Company Play?

DME companies are significant, especially for first-time moms, because you to know what pump works for you. As of course, you need to find the best breast pumps through insurance.

You need to have a conversation with them to know the best breast pump insurance covered by your company as you want a hassle-free experience.
