How to build an email list for marketing?

by Nicholas H. Online marketing expert
Do you finally want to build an email list? Good decision because: The money is in your email list. If you don't have one, you leave your business to chance.

The problem:
Your reach on social media, YouTube or even your own blog can simply be taken away from you overnight. Zuckerberg or Bezos just have to snap their fingers and your visibility is halved thanks to an algorithm change. You hardly reach your target group and your income fluctuates greatly.

The solution:
Building your own email list. Your active newsletter protects you from all external influences. Nobody can take your list away from you. The bigger this list and the better your newsletters, the more people will buy what you offer.

That's why I'll show you how to build an email list and use your newsletter as a mouthpiece to your target group.

You will know:

which tools you can use for your newsletter marketing
how to make the newsletter appealing to your target group
how to effectively collect email addresses
what you should pay attention to
how to give your subscribers the feeling of an exclusive community
how to promote your newsletter

Then let's go. Read first, then implement!

1. Find a newsletter platform and build your email list

Logically, in order to build an email list, you first have to create it. To do this, look for a suitable provider that you will use to send your e-mails in the future. There you create a list in which all the data of the people who subscribe to your newsletter are saved.

The best-known newsletter providers include:

mailchimp
ActiveCampaign
CleverReach
GetResponse
ClickTip
rapidmail
ConvertKit

2. Make it as easy as possible for your future subscribers to subscribe to your list

All roads lead to my email list. Throughout my website you will find opportunities to sign up for my copywriting newsletter. Therefore, to build your email list quickly, you should include the form on every single page of your website.

3. Ask for a maximum of 2 pieces of personal data

The more fields you include, the more subscribers you'll lose. Therefore, ask only a few personal data. A maximum of 2 fields in the form are sufficient, namely e-mail address and first name.

I ask for both, some only ask for the email address. If you have the first names, you can address each e-mail personally to the recipient, which I think is quite good.

4. Don't overdo it when asking for your readers' email addresses

Asking for an email address is like asking someone out. If you do it too pushy, you will be rejected. Don't sing the praises of yourself and your awesome newsletter. Rather, let your readers know what transformation they will experience through your emails. So give a very good reason why someone should give you their email address.

My newsletter helps you, for example, to write advertising texts that arouse the interest of your prospective customers. This content will make you a better copywriter and increase your conversions.

If you would write: “Sign up on my list so that I can regularly rub my offers in your face”, you will drive away potential buyers.

5. Offer an irresistible offer in exchange for the email address

This offer is called a lead magnet or freebie. In order for your readers to sign up for your newsletter, you can offer them something and create a small incentive. With the free offer you solve a specific problem of your target group.

Direct this free offer directly to your desired customers who should buy from you later. Think about what questions these people are asking themselves and what problem they would like to have solved

Make sure your freebie doesn't get too big. Get to the point quickly, address a problem and offer a solution. People want a quick fix, not a 100-page e-book. The most important thing is that this offer sounds simply irresistible.

The following are particularly good for freebies:

  • checklists
  • templates
  • instructions
  • hacks
  • Short email or video courses on XY
  • Voucher worth XY euros
  • Access to a dedicated members area
  • 6. Use testimonials from previous subscribers for more entries

Once you have your first subscribers and have provided them with helpful value, you can ask them what they think about it. You might even get positive feedback on your newsletter without being asked.

You then place this feedback near your registration form. People are allowed to see that others are enthusiastic about your emails.
    7. Create your own small landing page for your newsletter

This type of landing page is called a squeeze page. A dedicated page will also help you build your email list alongside the forms on your website. The advantage is that there are no distracting elements. Your visitors only have the option to subscribe to your email list or to leave the site.

There you can describe the advantages of your newsletter to your prospects in more detail. Be sure to include testimonials as well, as soon as you get them from your subscribers.

You can also link directly to this squeeze page via advertisements. If you were to just link to your website, there would be too many distractions and your ads would have little success.

I built this page right into the menu of my website. She immediately catches the eye. Here I describe what my readers can expect and how often they receive my newsletter.
    8. Create a popup

A pop-up opens within a short time after prospects read your website. In this window you can refer to your newsletter or promote your irresistible freebie.

Admittedly, pop-ups are controversial and mostly found to be annoying. So I recommend you just give it a try. You can then see for yourself whether the number of your subscribers is increasing or whether someone is complaining.

Don't let the window pop up as soon as your site opens, though. Give your reader some time to look around your website.
    9. Maintain a clean onboarding process

This is the entire process your new subscribers go through to receive your emails. The path begins with the registration form on your website and continues to the first newsletter.

    Note the following points:

Write the registration form in a way that is easy to understand
Write the next step on the thank you page that opens
Send an automated but self-written email with the confirmation link
Write on the second thank-you page that opens, how to proceed
Send an automated but self-written email with the link to the freebie (if you offer one)
    Then start your newsletters

Don't add emails to your list that weren't opted in using double opt-in. This is the only way to send a legally compliant newsletter. Also, make sure your subscribers can unsubscribe from your email list at any time (via a link in your emails).
This is what my onboarding process looks like

    10. Warm up your new contacts and send out newsletters after signing them up

You got the email address and your new reader got the freebie. Now it's time to warm up your new subscribers and keep them on your list too.

1-2 days after your new newsletter subscriber received your freebie, you could ask for feedback on it. You might also add a valuable additional tip to your free offer.

“Content is king” always applies to your newsletter. Always provide your readers with quality content that adds value AND entertains at the same time. Infotainment is the keyword. Your readers want testimonials and personal stories, not just tips and tricks.
