How do you know if Shared Hosting is for Your Site

by Alex Papaconstantinou Webmaster

Shared hosting is when a web server hosts pages of multiple websites. All websites and apps you browse on the web are hosted on web servers. The web servers are computers with programs that serve you the web pages of the website you happen to browse.

The web pages you see are made in HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), which is a special code for displaying pages the World Wide Web. This code is stored in files. If a computer serves you the files of more than one website, then they type of hosting in that server is “shared”.  If a computer serves files of a single website then we talk about dedicated hosting.

Is Shared Hosting for you?

Shared hosting can be very cheap and it may not offer enough security for websites hosting private or sensitive information. Since shared hosting is about sharing a web server and its programs with multiple other websites, this kind of hosting is appropriate for small websites that do not have high volume of traffic. These can be family websites, small blogs and small business websites.

If your traffic is in hundreds or thousands of visitors per day then the programs in the server may have a hard time serving your pages to the World Wide Web and your site may get too slow or it may crash. Likewise, if your “neighbour” websites (the websites hosted in the same server) have a traffic spike the programs in the server may have a hard time serving your pages and your site may crash.

With an infinite number of choices and competitive deals you can get a Shared Hosting plan for less than $5 a month.

The question is, how do you know if a shared hosting environment is sufficient for your site or app?

When deciding if shared hosting is the right environment for your site you really need to take into consideration what kind of site you wish to host. Here are some examples:

·         Size of database. If you have a small eCommerce business and plan to list 3-4 products then shared hosting is for you. If you have an eCommerce business and plan to list 300-400 products in a relatively big database then shared hosting is not for you.

·         Security. If you plant to use a third party payment processor, such as PayPal, then shared hosting is for you. If you intend to collect sensitive customer details, such as addresses or credit card details then shared hosting is not for you.

·         Number of pages. If you plant to host a site with 30 pages then shared hosting will be sufficient. However, if you end up publishing thousands of information pages then shared hosting is not for you.

·         Speed. If consistent high speed is not important to you then shared hosting is ok for you. If you have a lot of visits per day and you rely on high speed then you may need to consider other types of hosting.

You know that shared hosting is for your site when you do not have high volume of traffic. When you host a site for a small business or a personal blog.
