How do I choose your ski helmet?

by Eva P. Redactrice
The most important thing about skiing is safety. Adults or children, you must protect yourself and wear a helmet. Especially since you no longer have any excuse. Nowadays, they are very trendy and suitable for all morphologies. Locatour advises you to choose your ski helmet.

Why wear a ski helmet?
In French ski resorts, helmets are compulsory in only one case: when a child takes lessons at a ski school. Their skulls are significantly less strong than that of an adult, increasing the risk of head trauma. However, adults should not neglect helmet use, with a study showing that helmetuse would reduce the risk of trauma to skiers and snowboarders by more than 30%.

The ski helmet is therefore an effective protection, but also a good way to reduce the grip of the cold.

How is a ski helmet made?

A ski helmet is designed to protect you from any obstacle you may encounter: rocks, ice, other skiers, etc. It is usually composed of two layers:

The outer shell of the helmet, which is a rigid part, acts as a protective role against shocks and other objects.
The inner lining, which usually consists of expanded polystyrene. Its purpose is to absorb the impact and avoid head injuries. It will act like a foam that will compress during the impact.

What criteria to choose it well?

Given the large number of types and technologies available for ski helmets, you will need to consider certain criteria to make the right choice.

First of all, the first precaution to take is to check if the helmet is properly approved. To do so, it must include THE inscription EN 1077. Once this check has been done, we advise you to exclude any purchase on the internet. It is essential to try the helmet before buying it.

Size

As you probably suspected, the most important criterion for choosing your ski helmet is size. To find out which one will match you, take a tape meter to measure the turn of your head. Position it just above your ears and eyebrows, you will get a size ranging from 50 to 65 cm. Generally, an M-size is a head circumference of 53 to 56cm. A ski helmet, the right size, must not compress or float. When you shake your head: if it moves, it is too big. If it tightens you, it is too small. Last thing, the fitting must be done with your ski mask, to check its adaptation to the helmet.

Weight

When it comes to weight, a lightweight ski helmet will make it easier for you to move on the slopes. The majority of helmets weigh between 400-500 grams, which will not bother you at all to hurtle down the snowy slopes.

Ventilation

A ski helmet will keep you warm in the head. Look at those with a ventilator with a benevolent air and ventilation areas. But aerations are good, to be able to open them and close them is better! So be careful that your helmet doesn't turn into a real draft.
