How Can Indian Students Become US CPAs?

by Sailaja Chinna latest news updates
Chartered Accountancy (CA), one of the most sought-after professions and India’s highest accounting degree, is not recognized in all countries. The Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam, administered by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants(AICPA), is the highest level of proficiency in the field of Accountancy across the globe and is quite similar to the CA qualification in India. A CPA can act as a tax consultant, financial advisor, business consultant, and they can also take up any other position related to finance in a company. Owing to the global recognition of the CPA designation, it remains one of the most highly valued degrees in the public accounting domain and is perfect for anyone who wants to build a career in accounting at an international level.

Indian students can become CPAs too, and here is how:

Check your eligibility:

Every year of university education in India is equivalent to 30-semester credits of US education. The education requirements for CPA exam eligibility vary across states, but the main requirement is that candidates must have completed either a bachelor’s degree or 120 college credit hours.

If you have a B.Com degree cleared in first division from a NAAC A accredited university, you will be entitled to an extra 30 credits taking your total credits to 120.

However, some states require that their candidates complete a minimum of 150 college credit hours to sit for the exam, and you’re good to go if you have any of the following qualifications:

B.Com + MCom/MBA equalling 150 credits
B.Com +CA/CS/CWA equalling 150 credits

Send your transcripts:

You must then apply for your transcripts from your respective universities or the ICAI if you are a CA. Contact a state board of Accountancy to obtain an application. In order for you to be eligible for the CPA exam, you must get a verification of your academic background done by a recognized evaluation agency like the World education Services in the US. Send them your transcripts to determine if you have the requisite number of US equivalent credits or not. The evaluators will send the reports of your evaluation to the state board, who will then contact you regarding the confirmation of your eligibility.

Obtain the NTS:

Once your CPA Exam application has been processed, you’re determined eligible to take one or more sections of the CPA Exam, and you’ve paid all fees, NASBA will issue an NTS to you, that allows you to schedule your exam at a chosen Prometric center. If you want to schedule an appointment to take the exam, you must have a valid Notice to Schedule (NTS). Remember that every section/paper needs a new NTS.
