Home Food Preservation – A Core Skill taught in Self Sufficiency Classes

by Mile Anderson Online Tutor

A major step in adapting self sufficiency as a lifestyle is to learn the survival skills which we never developed when we were consumers. A lot of these you will learn in Self Sufficiency II courses. Part of these new skills will be building your own Kitchen Garden – all food will need to be sourced from this. Connected to this new skill set will be managing farm animals – all meat produce as well as milk, cheese and eggs will be sourced from the animal farm. However, just because you are adapting a back to basics lifestyle that does not mean you will be depriving yourself of the joy that is food. The only things that have changed are you have detached yourself from fast food and high end restaurants and you no longer buy food from supermarkets. Not having enough food will not be a problem, because of the kitchen garden and the farm animals you will have food self sufficiency. Self sufficiency courses will teach you food preservation techniques which will ensure that you enough food all year round. What perhaps you need to bring with you is the creative skill to cook the food.

You have all the elements to create a gourmet meal in the tradition of Martha Stewart herself, except perhaps the skill. This is why many who have shifted to the self sufficient lifestyle share that they took their time before the shift. They had to prepare themselves not just emotionally but also to be equipped with the right set of skills as well as ensuring that they were debt free and that they had ample savings for the shift. In line with this, an additional skill worth adding to the roster is that of gaining culinary skills. Having a complete pantry of food is useless if you do not have the skills to transform it to a delicious meal for you and your family.

Being able to enjoy good food you prepared yourself will help the transition much easier since you will not feel deprived while at the same time feel proud of yourself. Adjusting to a new life will not be easy but being able to use skills you brought with you will help you feel productive and useful. And if you do decide to not go into self sufficiency as a lifestyle, you can always become a chef which deals with nothing but fresh ingredients from farmer’s markets.
