What Is SEO / Search Engine Optimization?
SEO is a process of improving your site to increase its visibility for relevant searches. Or we can say SEO is all about improving a site’s rankings in the organic (non-paid) section of the search results.
SEO can be classified into two main categories:
- On-page SEO
- Off-page SEO
What is On-Page SEO?
On-page SEO (also known as “on-site” SEO) is the act of enhancing contrasting parts of your website that affect your search engine rankings. Or we can say On-page SEO refers to the tactics you use on your website to help it rank better. The basic tactics like HTML code, using keywords, title tags, optimizing the meta description, and alt tags, that’s the foundation for on-page SEO.
On-page SEO factors:
There are many various technical aspects of a webpage which can be optimized with on-page SEO, and they are:
- Put your targeted keywords in the title tag of every page on your site.
- Ceiling of your title tags should not exceed 55-60 characters (including spaces).
- Push the keyword closer to the starting of the title (ONLY if it sounds natural).
- Don’t stuff your keywords.
- Encompass brand at the termination of the title tag, separated by a pipe bar (|)
A meta description is a precise description that appears downstairs your URL on a search engine results. It should describe the content of that page, but more importantly, make sure to include any relevant keywords in this area so they will be picked up by search engine crawlers. While writing a meta description for any page on your site, there are some things to keep in the back of your mind to make sure you’re getting the most on-page SEO value from it:
- Make sure to include the keyword; it will be bolded when people encounter your site in the SERP.
- Always Keep meta descriptions under 160 characters; Google will truncate anything longer.
- Make sure to convey the value of your description to the potential readers.
On considering these three elements, you’re optimizing each and every meta description to not only make it easy for search engines to search and index your content/description but also make it not difficult for readers to understand why they should click. Doing so will optimize your potential click-through and provide searchers with the most valuable information upfront.
Keywords are the glue that cabled your on-page SEO strategy because they can be incorporated into all these technical elements to help the right visitors find you at the right time.
Headings are usually the largest yet most crucial words on the page, and for that reason, search engines give them a little more weightage than your other page copy. It is always a superior recommendation to work your target keywords into the headings of each web page but make sure you accurately reflect your page’s great content. Always make sure your H1 Tag limited to at least one per page, all other headers are H2 or H3.
Image alt text is the text which appears when images are not displayed on your website because of any reason. While it’s a way for you to describe the content of images when they don’t load, or when website visitors are using a screen reader, choosing the right image alt text is a vital/important part of on-page SEO. When a search engine crawler is going through your site, they’ll be able to parse these HTML attributes faster than the image file. Alt text refers to the phrase that can be attributed to a picture file to help it be indexed for searching.
URL structure is essential and foremost for today’s marketers, because it permits search engines to crawl from page-to-page on your website more smoothly and effortlessly, and makes navigation more efficient for visitors. URLs are mostly used to contain keywords that reflect the pages they direct to, as easy-to-understand URLs are more likely to earn clicks, and also help search engines crawl your site.
Linking internally to other pages on your website is useful to visitors and it’s also useful to improve rank on search engines. Internal links fabricate your site simply to navigate for visitors, but they also make it easier for search engines to understand your site and index your pages, and this will result in a higher rank. Connecting the post with existing content is always a good way of making it easier for web crawlers to find the page. Since they already have the meta description and long-tail keywords article in the index, the next time a bot goes out to crawl the page, they’ll quickly find the new post and bring it back to the search engine which eventually improves our website rank.
The on-page ranking factor also depends on the performance of your website and it's pages. Pages that don't render properly on mobile or take a long time to load will rank lower in the search engine results pages (SERPs), as users will get frustrated, leave, and increase the bounce rate.
Google wants to help its users find what they’re trying to find as quickly as possible to provide the best user experience. Therefore, optimizing your website and it's pages to load faster helps your site rank higher in the search results.
What is Off-Page SEO?
Off-page SEO refers to factors that are outside of your website itself and still can affect your website ranking. off-page SEO depends on another web page to improve your site ranking. Off-page optimization mainly deals with link building. Off-page SEO is an ongoing process and it requires obtaining new links that are given priority by search engines. A good off-page SEO strategy will highlight how relevant your site is to SERP users, grow brand awareness, boost engagement with your content.
Off-page SEO factors:
The number and quality of backlinks you have got to your site is undoubtedly the most important factor of off-page SEO. The more sites linking to your content, the more domain authority (DA) Google grants your website, boosting your ranking. A backlink is at the heart of off-page SEO. Search engines employ backlinks as point to the linked-to content's quality, so if a site contains many high-value backlinks than it will usually rank higher than an otherwise equal site with fewer backlinks.
Measured on a scale from 1-100, your domain authority (DA) is a number given to you by search engines to determine the strength of your website. Domain authority is measured by different factors, like, how long you’ve had your domain name (the longer the better), the history of the domain name, the number of backlinks, and the number of 404 pages.
Page ranking isn’t trusted directly to the interactions on a social media post, but posts that can generate a lot of clicks will definitely help in boosting traffic to the site and generate a lot of link shares.
Social bookmarks increased traffic to your website. Search engines index top social bookmarking websites and this will help your website increase its ranking. You can bookmark your pages while creating backlinks to your content. This is the best strategy for brand building and your search engine results pages content can go viral if it gets shared widely among users.
