Fabric Gift Wrap: Your Unique Wrapping Alternative

by Amrita Patel Urban Creative

Gifting is something we all indulge in, be it the festive season or a special occasion. A gift can brighten the day of the receiver as well as the giver. A gift also conveys love and thoughtfulness. But have you ever thought about what we use to wrap gifts?

Usually, we use wrapping paper that we buy from stores. These are usually glossy and are difficult to recycle. Moreover, the paper is thrown away the moment the gift is unwrapped. What if there was an alternative to this waste?

Well, there is! Urban Creative has introduced fabric gift wraps that are reusable, attractive and good for the planet! The Dāman Furoshiki gift wraps are a beautiful blend of Japanese and Indian traditions. Dāman, in Sanskrit, means giving or gifting and Furoshiki means the Japanese technique of using fabric to wrap gifts and other objects. Traditionally, the Furoshiki gift wrap is given back to the giver after the gift is opened, but this can be a part of the gift too. You can shop these at https://urbancreative.co.in/furoshiki-fabric-gift-wraps-and-bags/.

The reusable gift wraps can also be used for other purposes, such as on the table, as a napkin, or even as a bandana. This is also a great option for carrying or wrapping a lunchbox. These wraps are made of organic cotton and use natural dyes only. The dyes are created using plants and natural elements.

To make it, natural indigo is used, reds are obtained from the madder root, and black dyes are obtained from mixing iron extracts with jaggery. Yellow and orange shades are obtained from Himalayan rhubarb and turmeric, while grey is obtained from potassium permanganate. The process of dyeing uses natural mordants like myrobalan and alum.

This is a much better alternative than the traditional wrapping paper, which is a synthetic material and is non-biodegradable or reusable. Even though the wrapping papers are called papers, they are modified and made glossy using chemicals, which are not eco-friendly or biodegradable, and most wrapping paper is single-use only. Fabric gift wraps are the perfect alternative for anyone who is environmentally conscious.

They come in these sizes:

  • Small: 33 cm x 33 cm (Perfect for small gifts like jewellery or perfume boxes)

  • Medium: 52 cm X 52 cm (Perfect for books, watches, small toy boxes, etc.)

  • Large: 70 cm x 70 cm (Perfect for gifting clothes, wine bottles, electronic devices, etc.)

  • Extra Large: 106 cm x 106 cm (Perfect for large boxes like toys and as tablecloths)
