Types of pitch roller

The pitch rollers not only play a major role in preparing a cricket pitch for the match but it also contributes a big part in the maintenance of these pitches where domestic level, club level or international level cricket is played.


Walk-behind rollers


The most common pitch roller is the walk-behind rollers that are effectively equipped with petrol driven motors. It is very easy to move forward and move in the reverse direction as well. Moreover, with sophisticated speed variable and control panel, it is quite easy to drive with minimum effort. These type of roller can be empty, sand filled or concrete filled and water filled. Though water filled rollers are used the weight of which is around 1 to 1.5 tonnes.


Ride on rollers


There is another category of roller that is called ride on roller. This type of rollers comprises of one roller at the front as well as one roller in the back. Apart from it, there is a seat in the middle for the operator to run or operate the roller. It is heavier than a normal roller because it contains two rollers. It normally weighs around 2 to 2.5 tonne or more than that. In case the curator requires a heavy roller during the pitch preparation, this kind of roller will be suitable for them.


Hand rollers


The most commonly seen roller is hand rollers. It is needless to say that it is a manual roller at it can be rolled down on the pitch using the hands. Since this kind of cricket pitch rollers is relatively less in weigh, hence it is light enough to pull along manually for the rolling purpose. The use of hand roller is commonly seen in the early preparation of the cricket pitches. However, mainly it is used on wet pitches where heavy rollers cannot be used or in the situation where rolling is required on the clipping of grass.
