Cold Chain Logistics Evolution
by Rutuja shah Digital MarketingIndian cold chain industry is expected to grow
tremendously over the next few years. The increased investments, modernisation
of existing facilities, and the establishment of new ventures are contributing
to the growth of the cold chain logistics
industry. In simple words, a cold chain is a temperature-controlled supply
chain. Cold chain involves maintaining the desired low-temperature range with
the help of equipment and logistics. It is used to preserve and ensure the
extended shelf life of products, such as fresh agricultural produce, seafood,
frozen food, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.
The Indian Food Processing Industry
India consumes the largest proportion of food
and is one of the top producers of agricultural products. Food processing is
nothing but value addition to agricultural or horticultural produce.
The food processing sector comprises two
segments -
Primary - Packaged fruits and vegetables,
milk, etc
Value-added - Processed fruits and vegetables,
juices, jam & jelly etc
The Bottlenecks
Even though the food processing industry has
great potential, the local markets or farmers often have to rely on the
inefficient supply chain. There is a need for integrated logistical support,
and cold chain solutions in particular to enable easy accessibility and smooth
flow of produce from farms to table, safe and fresh.
The Cold Chain Segment
A major portion of the fresh produce gets
wasted due to inadequate cold chain infrastructure, and hence losses are
incurred during storage and transit. Temperature-controlled storage and
distribution in supply chain solutions management have two main segments, namely,
refrigerated transport and surface storage.
For the transport of perishable products cold chain logistics
service providers use refrigerated trucks, and containers. Warehouses with
temperature-controlled technology help in storage of the perishable products.
Transportation and storage of fresh produce
and processed food require technical and quality standards to ensure longer
shelf life and selling value of products and are important for the growth of
cold chain management solutions.
