Chaos and Creation

by Larry Winebrenner Writer
There is an ancient joke about a group of scientists who challenged God's claim as the only true creator of humankind.

"We have discovered the process from the moment of non-existence through the complete---what you call spiritual---human essence."

God accepted their challenge, so the scientists on their side were ready and God on the Divine Essences's stood ready.

"You go first," offered God.

"O.K.," said the scientists. "We'll start like you did. Give us some earth.'

God said, "Create your own earth."

Ha. Ha. Ha.

Maybe this is not real funny. But neither is it an attack on science. the point is, creation---true creation---does not start with something that exists. We often call this creation---creation of a new art form, creation of a novel or a play. Actually, that activity is merely rearranging parts.

Getting back to the not-so-funny joke, the creation of God was said to have come out of chaos. That is, "The earth was without form, and void, and darkness was on the face of the deep." This is about chaotic as you can get. There wasn't even the existence of light.

Sometimes our life feels like that---without form, and void. We feel there is not even a gleam of light in our chaotic situation. That's a time when we can say, "Great! Now's the time to get creative."

That's the answer whether our business life is in chaos---or our personal relationships, or our emotional state. Doing nothing solves nothing. Being creative might fail. yes, but if everything is already in chaos, what difference does it make. You just keep creating until something works.

I started this article with a story to make a point. I'll end it the same way.

Two crock pots of cream set side by side. As it happened, a frog fell into each. In the first pot the frog tried jumping out. He tried to jump out several times, but soon discovered it was useless, gave up and drowned in the crock of cream.

In the second crock, the frog tried, discovering that it was useless to jump. Try as he could, he couldn't make it out. But he didn't give up. He jumped and jumped. After a while he had churned a lump of butter large enough to crawl upon and jump out.

Just keep on trying.
