Cat Owners Should Have These Great Tips

by Louise Marsh Blogger

Some people believe cats are magical. They are great house pets, seeing as they are so independent and smart. But, cat care is not always simple. Continue reading to learn some excellent cat care tips so that you can raise a happy and healthy cat.

Tips for Keeping Cats

  • Make sure to keep your cat's litter box clean at all times. Most cats do not like to use a dirty litter box, much like you would not want to use a dirty toilet. Scoop it at least once a day. Empty and give it a good cleaning once a week or more if needed.
  • Keep a clean litter box. Like you, a cat will generally not use a filthy bathroom. Find a quiet area out of the way that the box can stay in, and don't move it unless necessary. Scoop solids out a couple of times of the day. Make sure to dump the whole box, wash it with a gentle detergent, and refill it once a week.

  • Clip your cat's nails regularly. Cats do have to scratch. However, when cats scratch, their nail sheaths come off and their sharp, pointy claws are exposed. Clipping your cat's claws every two to three weeks keeps them blunt and helps keep harm to furniture, humans, and other pets to a minimum.
  • As your cat gets older, changes in behavior may signal pain. If your cat doesn't like to jump or climb any more, it may be in pain. If your cat stops taking care of grooming or stops using its litter box, pain may be the cause. Be sure to have your older cat checked out by your vet if you notice behavior changes.
  • If you find your cat is harming furniture or other objects, it may be boring. Keep a few safe toys around for your cat to play with. Scratching posts can also deter your cat from scratching your furniture. Or, build a small cat house out of cardboard. Your cat will love having a place to hide, and the cardboard can also be used to scratch on!
  • If you replace an old scratching post, your cat may be unhappy with the new one. Save money on scratching posts. Wrap your old scratching post with some sisal rope to spiff it up. Your cat will be happy not to lose its favorite old post. You will save a little cash.
  • Give your cats easier access to a window to keep your curtains from getting scratched. Putting vertical blinds up will allow the easiest access for your cat, but if you need to keep your curtains, use a lightweight rod that will fall if your cat attempts to climb the curtains. It will keep both your curtains and your cat safe.
  • Keep an eye on early warning signs of health issues in cats. Cats usually display warning signs if they are struggling with health issues. Some common signs to look out for include eating habit changes, sleeping habit changes, not being able to groom properly, changes in eating habits, changes in sleeping habits, depression, sneezing, increased thirst, watery eyes, changes in behavior, hiding, and vomiting. If they display these symptoms, take them to a vet right away. The sooner you take, them the better.
  • Take your cat to the vet periodically. A lot of cat owners tend to avoid the vet because it can be harder to get a cat ready to go anywhere she does not want to go! It is also easy to avoid the vet because cats seem so self-reliant. However, it's smart to get your cat to the vet to avoid any problems.
  • Have patience with your cat. Remember that your cat is not a dog, and may not be as easily trainable as one. However, if you are being clear in your commands and gently encouraging them, you'll find that your cat responds the way you want him to. Just be patient.
