Yvonne Strahovski has played a lead role as a flight attendant, who ends up being at an immigration center in the Australian desert because the passport which she was carrying identified her as a German citizen.

Stateless is a six-part limited series that has been released on Netflix on July 8, 2020. It is a story of four strangers whose lives collide at an immigration detention center in the middle of the Australian desert. These four strangers are playing characters of an air hostess who is running from a cult, an Afghan refugee, a young father, and a bureaucrat who is trying to contain a scandal. If you want to have an overview of the show, you can log on Netflix’s main YouTube channel and watch the trailer before you start watching the series on Netflix. The official trailer of Stateless was released on June 24, 2020, and is available to watch on Netflix’s main YouTube channel. The trailer has already received massive praise from the audience, and the viewers are expecting the series to be of the same level as the trailer.

All About the Narrative of Stateless

As we have already discussed, the show is about four strangers who are stuck at an immigration detention center, in the middle of the Australian desert. All of them are from different backgrounds and are having their own very different reasons for getting detained. The show after a couple of narratives, flashbacks to the past to reveal the circumstances that brought them there. The show then oscillated between four different stories and then after some time later all the narratives regarding the four of them intersect at Australia’s immigration detention center. The four detained individuals include an air hostess who is running from a cult, an Afghan refugee who was seeking a new life with his family, a young father and a bureaucrat who gets caught up in a national scandal. Every narrative presented in the series confronts issues of border control in different ways; however, in all the stories, the reason shown for that will be humanity.

Is Stateless Based on a True Story?

The answer to this will be a big yes. An incident of a mentally-ill Australian German woman who unlawfully gets placed in an immigrant detention center by the Australian Immigration Department is a real-life incident that happened fifteen years ago. The case was related to a woman named Cornella Rau; a German-born citizen who was a permanent resident of Australia. She had been grown up in Sydney, but because of her German birth, she could easily switch between Australian and German accents. Once, when she gets admitted to the hospital, she disappears from there. The incident took place on March 4, 2004. The reason was for her disappearance was that she refused to reveal her true identity to the police and immigration officials when they came for the inspections. And due to this reason only, she was put in prison for six months and then later transferred to the Baxter Detention Center as a suspected illegal immigrant. She then remained in the detention center for four months. She was released as soon as she got discovered as a permanent resident of Australia. She used to work as a flight attendant in real, which is shown in the series too.

Barton Detention Center: A Real Location or a Reel Location

The Barton Detention Center shown in the series Stateless is just a reel location. Even though the Barton Detention Center is not a real one, but still it portrays the view of real detention centers in Australia. To be real, it was Baxter Detention Center, not Barton Detention Center, where all these incidents related to Cornella Rau happened. The full name of the Baxter Detention Center was “Baxter Immigration Reception and Processing Center” which got opened in 2002. After operating for over five years, it got closed in 2007 as new and more prominent detention centers were made, which left it of no use later on. Baxter Detention Center detained hundreds of immigrants and asylum seekers. Over its service of five years, several protests happened there which were done by the protestors over the ill-treatment of the asylum seekers by the center. After the few months of the case of Cornelia Rau, in 2004 several protests happened there which were done by the detainees themselves followed by a riot that occurred in 2005.

We hope that the series will be successful in showing these kinds of situations on a mass scale to the public and will lead to a global conversation on the border protection systems across the countries and how the human lives have been affected over a period by certain misconceptions.
