Effective Link Exchange - How to Make Someone Do a Link Exchange with You

by Christopher Clayton

First of all, you should know that link exchange is no good for established sites nowadays, search engines somewhat doesn’t give that much credit from 2 way links.

Anyway it can still help if you’re just starting a new blog. Link exchanges can give you a pretty decent amount of traffic just to start off, but remember to remove it after you have built your traffic.

Yesterday I got an e-mail asking for a link exchange that honestly, really, ACTUALLY sucks!

Here’s the mail.

Dear owner of http://web-wanker.teenzoned.com/,

I’m the webmaster of http://www.***.com.

We came across your site on the Internet and feel that it would fit
perfectly into our collection of quality software-related links at
http://www.***.com.

The Google PR of this site is currently 0.

We’ve already placed a link to your web site along with a description
at our site on the http://www.***.com/links.html page,
which we encourage you to check for accuracy.

We’d appreciate it if you place a link back to our site using the
following HTML code (just copy and paste it into your links page):

< xhref=”http://www.***.com” title=”Make Money Online
All-in-one money Machine

Earn multiple streams of cash with Top-rated business opportunities”>

Make Money Online
All-in-one money Machine
Earn multiple streams of cash with Top-rated business opportunities

On your page, the code will look like this:
***
Make Money Online
All-in-one money Machine

Earn multiple streams of cash with Top-rated business opportunities

If you’d like the description of your site modified, the category
changed, or if you have any other cross-promotion ideas, feel free to
email us.

Please note that if you don’t place a reciprocal link to us somewhere
on your site within a week, the link to your site will automatically
be removed from our directory. Please link to us using the code above,
and let us know where we can find the link.

Best regards,
**** ***
***@hotmail.com

This is NOT SPAM — this is a one-time reciprocal link request. We
have NO INTENTION to email you again. You can also reply to this email
with REMOVE in the subject line to make sure we’ll NEVER send you any
more e-mails in the future.

This message really made me laugh and angry in some kind of way,

What made me mad?! Well, It looks like this guy just automated it and saying shouting at me that it was not. “This is NOT SPAM, bla bla bla?

You don’t want to end up like that guy would you? Of course not! So here are some tips that I have compiled for a better chance of link exchange acceptance :)

  1. Talk like you’re talking to your friend – Not dear owner of http://thissite.
  2. Never tell your PR if it’s a 0 – He sounds serious but that part, really wrecks the whole thing.
  3. Don’t give HTML codes – Don’t ask too much when asking for a link exchange and remember not to suggest your anchor text first. Let the site owner agree first after you do business ;)
  4. You’re not a teacher! – “On your page, the code will look like…” Who are you anyway?! You’re not my html teacher, and oh yea.. I don’t have one. People hate it when someone teaches them things that they already know. I don’t know why, but you might as well avoid it.
  5. Do not threaten – “Please note that if you don’t place a reciprocal link to us…” Who likes to be threatened anyway? Again, let’s go back to number 1 “Talk like you’re talking to your friend”

Just in case you need a link exchange template, I have edited and refined the e-mail above.

Hi Name!

(Remember to put his name so it doesn’t look a bit spammy)

I’m Bob, a 20yr old blogger from the Philippines. I blog at http://web-wanker.teenzoned.com

(Introduce yourself first. Make them a bit curious so they will click your link)

You’ve got a great blog out there ;)I love your posts and most likely the recent one about the some kind of an article. I already subscribed to your feed because I found your blog very useful.

If you have time, can you give me some tips on how to improve my blog? I’m really willing to learn from someone good like you.

(Flattery :D )

And by the way, I’m looking for link exchange partners. I think it would benefit us both, so maybe you might want to give it a shot.

I already added your site in the list, just in case ;)

(Here comes the Link Exchange!)

Cheers from Philippines!

I almost forgot, try your best to not use a free e-mail like @yahoo.com or @gmail.com so you look more professional.

If you have any thoughts, comments, criticisms you might as well share it to me ;)
